I love how the lefties who bash real news outlets like Fox News call up leftwing blogs like Huffington to support their failing party.
People are starting to realize they were lied to by Obama and his handlers and made a terrible, terrible mistake in giving a committed marxist the keys to the White House. They will make the first step correcting that tragedy in a few weeks. How he said he was going to govern and how he and his party actually govern has sickened the nation.
It was a terrible mistake and many people had high hopes in their chosen one. Hopefully a correction is in the making.
I doubt that 80% of the 54% know what the true definition of conservatism is. They probably don't know how conservatism came to be in the US, and who the founding fathers of US conservatism are. If asked what conservatism meant, they would probably say lower taxes and smaller government yet that is more along the lines on libertarianism/neoclassical liberalism. Just saying....
Well, Republican voters were disappointed they did not totally bankrupt and destroy this country in Bush years, even second Bush term, so now is your chance. Hail Corporatist Rule!
Hey, have you not yet realized which party has controlled congress since 2007? It's only been pointed out to you dozens of times.
I consider myself moderately conservative--especially on economic issues, and I've started voting democratic. I'm far from the only one. If my only option for voting "conservative" is supporting a candidate on the fringe end of the right wing spectrum, I'm going to find the one nearer the middle. Lots of you go on about radical liberals running the democratic party, but if you look at the legislation they actually propose, it's very centrist. That is, unless you're looking at it from a right wing extremist viewpoint

Agreed i'd say nearly all that call themselves "conservative" have no idea what that even means. Republicans in the past were conservatives. Republicans of today are down right fascists.
Oh please most Americans have no clue what it means to be a conservative, even if it bit them in their obese fat arse. There is only one person that is a true Republican conservative and that man is Ron Paul. The Republicans are fascists and the Democrats are socialists. Neither represent true fiscal conservatism. Who says because you're a conservative you have to support the military industrial complex and endless wars? How many of these so called "conservatives" wholeheartedly support the war on terror? How man of these so called conservatives support the pillaging and plundering of the US economy through state corporatism dressed up as free market capitalism.
Most of the so called "conservatives" are just as confused as any liberal. If America wants to see real change they will have to vote in REAL leaders and people that stand for something. As long as people laugh at guys like Ron Paul and call him a kook and a whackjob (ala Glenn Beck when Paul was running for President) America will continue to sink into chaos and crisis.

Polls show that Americans, if asked whether they are "Conservative" or "Liberal" will favor labelling themselves as "Conservative" over "Liberal." However, they do not usually understand the terms well enough to accurately label themselves.
When the poll is broken down into individual issues, and where Americans fall on those particular issues, Americans are overwhelmingly progressive/liberal. Asking such a generic and polar question (Conservative or Liberal) does not lead to an accurate snapshot of the nation, and that's why conservatives love that broad poll. They've managed to convince Americans that conservatism and liberalism mean something other than what they are. Here is the breakdown: American National Election Studies
"The Role of Government – 69 percent of Americans believe the government “should care for those who can’t care for themselves”; twice as many people (43 percent vs. 20 percent) want “government to provide many more services even if it means an increase in spending” as want government to provide fewer services “in order to reduce spending.”
The Economy — 77 percent of Americans think Congress should increase the minimum wage; 66 percent believe “upper-income people” pay too little in taxes; 53 percent feel the Bush administration’s tax cuts have failed because they have increased the deficit and caused cuts in government programs.
Social Issues — 61 percent of Americans support embryonic stem cell research; 62 percent want to protect Roe v. Wade; only 3 percent of Americans rank same-sex marriage as the “most important” social issue.
Security — 43 percent of Americans say we are spending too much on our military; 60 percent feel the federal government should do more about restricting the kinds of guns that people can purchase.
The Environment — 75 percent of Americans would be wiling to pay more for electricity if it were generated by renewable sources to help reduce global warming; 79 percent want higher emissions standard for automobiles.
Energy – 52 percent of Americans believe “the best way for the U.S. to reduce its reliance on foreign oil” is to “have the government invest in alternative energy sources”; 68 percent of the public thinks U.S. energy policy is better solved by conservation than production.
Immigration — 57 percent of Americans feel “most recent immigrants to the U.S. contribute to this country” rather than “cause problems.” Sixty-seven percent of Americans feel that “on the whole,” immigration is a “good thing for this country today.”
Health Care — 69 percent of Americans think it is the responsibility of the federal government to make sure all Americans have access to health coverage; 76 percent find access to health care more important than maintaining the Bush tax cuts; three in five would be willing to have their own taxes increased to achieve universal coverage."
The fact is that Americans know exactly where they stand on most of the major issues, but they don't realize that their stance is usually left-of-center. If you ask these left-of-center Americans if they are conservative or liberal, they may incorrectly call themselves what they are not. There must also be a distinction in the question between "Fiscal" and "Social" when asking whether liberal or conservative. For example, a voter may believe strongly in "less spending" and so they will believe they are "conservative," but they may also believe strongly in things like gay marriage, workers rights, etc, so they may also be "liberal."
To sum up, this poll is a load of crap. The number of Americans who can accurately place themselves on a political spectrum is small. The amount who will answer anyway is large. And so, you have this generic poll with zero detail and little insight.
And yes, regardless of the political spectrum, incumbents are going to lose out this November just as incumbents lost in 2008. As long as the economy does not improve, Americans will flop back and forth between both parties looking for answers in the form of politicians.
