I suspect you won't see a great deal of this on Fox or MSNBC, or even the nightly news. Even doing a google search, it is clear that there isn't a great deal of news on this event. A quick check and rough guess is that there are about 12,000 to 1, articles for the Chilean miners compared to this which is by far a more potentially volatile event.

Twelve U.S. soldiers face trial after Afghan civilians 'were killed for sport and their fingers collected as trophies'
Twelve US soldiers face trial after Afghan civilians killed 'for sport' - whistle-blower originally ignored | Mail Online

Quote:
A dozen US soldiers are facing trail accused of being part of a 'kill team' that allegedly killed Afghan civilians in an arbitrary fashion - and they even collected their victims' fingers as trophies of war.

Case of Accused Soldiers May Be Worst of 2 Wars
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/10/04/us...er=rss&emc=rss
Quote:
an investigation into accusations that a drug-addled Army unit formed a secret self-described “kill team” that repeatedly killed Afghan civilians for sport, posing for pictures with victims and taking body parts as trophies.

The particularly chilling and gruesome details of the accusations make the case different in many ways from the broader universe of publicly known civilian killings in Iraq and Afghanistan, said military law specialists and human rights advocates who track such killings.

What is really tough is that the other 99.99% of US soldiers who are out doing their duty honorably will be impacted by this event, as will no doubt our ability to win anyones hearts or minds in the region.

War is hell, and the occasional Charles Manson type will fall through the cracks and be given a weapon, but what is even more chilling is that this guy very well may have just been that sweet boy Billy from down Maple street. After prolonged and repeated deployments, even the best and most stalwart of men begin to degrade in both body and mind.

As much as I rail against military and empire spending, I hope one place that spending is increased is for the care of our soldiers when they return home from this hell in the armpit of the world. Soldiers on the edge of this type of behavior will be living next door if not already, so think hard about it.

In a rather disturbing update, as though it could get much worse, apparently one of the primary soldiers responsible had brain damage from a prior IED.

So does the US military now keep soldiers with brain damage on the front lines? Are you serious?

Waddington said his 22-year-old client was brain-damaged from prior IED attacks, was using prescription drugs and smoking hashish and was under the influence of and in fear of his commanding officer, who is also charged.
Have recruitment and retention standards been lowered to this point? Surely the military has people lining up around the building wanting to join that they needn't keep soldiers with traumatic brain injuries out on the front.

Although I am pretty sure this whole event and the various surrounding circumstances will be swept under the rug and down the memory hole, too many in this country love wars they are unwilling to engage in, to the point they will deny even thinking about it.

You won't see a great deal of positive news stories about the accomplishments of our troops overseas either. I imagine this will get much more airtime than the stories about our fine men and women who are working towards promoting peace by building schools for girls, roads, hospitals, etc. Regardless, our troops need to come home. Send in special OPS, undercover agents, and focus on information gathering. Leave the combat and nation building exercises that ultimately reveal very little cost benefit for our efforts.

You forgot to say thank you to the US servicemen and women after you freely expressed your feelings, compliments of their sacrifice.

Waiting.

It's not one IED attack but a series of them. And among the perscription drugs they were taking is Ambien. Ambien has been linked with sleep driving and other activities done without actually waking up and on the very short time I took it I felt as if I was swimming when I did wake up. Someone who had physcial brain damage should never be taking something like this which can for some make it hard to pick out reality hours after waking.

These men should not have even BEEN there after the multiple IED's. For them the damage had already showed and how do we care for them? Drugs and more combat. I anticipate a growing problem among veterans where there has been IED attacks and other traumatic damage that hasn't fully showed yet. I hope that the VA doesn't treat it like Gulf War Syndrom, which in the end proved to be real.

The real tragedy here is that in a sense these men may not be to blame if the injuries are the cause. They will still be held responsible. The real ones to blame are the people who sent them back into combat when it was known they were injured, and filled them with psych drugs to make up the difference. Psych drugs must be monitored and watched because they can have very individual results. How do you do this when they are heading out to combat.

In the end *now* they are not someone you want living next door, and regardless of their true level of responsibility this is their tomorrow. Sad, since the ones who made the decisions that led to this will never pay for their actions.

LMAO! Yeah after we went in and totally destroyed a country we are supposed to feel good about rebuilding schools for girls, roads and hospitals? The embassy in Iraq is one of the biggest and most expensive embassies ever built. Your kids and your grandkids will be fighting their for eternity. We never left Bosnia. The Phillipinos want us out. The Japanese want us out. Next target..........Africa! Just wait. My grandkids will be bringing "democracy" and "prosperity" to that continent if America even survives its current situation.

WRONG! I thank the farmers, craftsmen, fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, and every other patriot that stood up to the British and drove them off. Without the "people" rising up against tyranny America would never have been. It's not a standing army that gives us nor protects our right to Freedom of Speech. It's our goddamn Constitution. It's not the terrorists we are fighting overseas that hamper my rights and who I'm scared of taking them away.....its' my OWN EFFING GOVERNMENT who is protected by a $600+ billion dollar defense budget. And it's going to be the "people" not the military that are going to have to rise up to protect it once again. So save your jarhead military pseudopatriotic mumbo jumbo for people that will actually believe it.

You'll be waiting quite a while.

Thank you to all the servicemen who fought the redcoats from 1775 to 1783. And thank you to all the men and women of the ACLU who have been tirelessly defending our freedom of speech since 1920.

These guys, if found guilty, need to have the book thrown at them. I hope they get punished to the full extent of the law.
