Why is it hard to believe? The elite have all kinds of connections just like royalty.
I don't think either Palin or Obama grew up in an exactly "elite" environment. I think it's more a function of having family who were very early colonists here--it doesn't mean that those colonists were important people--they could have been servants--just that they had children, and they were here. There are lots of connections between descendants of early settlers.
True but as far as I know, neither of the families have ever been in any kind of position of real power before, or real wealth. That's how I'd define elite, but others may define it differently.
