I surprised someone hasn't said that "Black Bears" is racist. Oh I get it, if it is Black, Brown, Red, Yellow, Green, Polka Dot or anything other than White, it isn't considered racist. Yet if a team was called the "White Tigers", every PC group, the NAACP, LuLac, ACLU and all these other HOGWASH groups would be crapping in their pants trying to get the name changed.

A few days ago, people here were screaming that calling tea party members "tea b..gers" rose to the level of HATE SPEECH--that it had to be changed--but now you're ranting about our liberal, overly PC society when it changes a sports mascot?
The problem isn't that we have too many racial stereotypes or currently un-politically correct historical names for mascots of sport teams--it's that we don't have enough.
I for one would like to see teams called the New York Jews, West Virgnia Hillbillies, San Francisco Fairies, El Paso Runnin' Mexicans, Portland Hippies, Milwaukee Poloks, Mississippi Confederates, Nevada Prostitutes, Detroit Thugs, and of course the Washington Porkbarrels. If you made fun of everyone from every region and ethnic group, then sports becomes an equal opportunity offender.

Perhaps in 150 years many of those things will be acceptable....until the PC Police determine they aren't.
What's funny is that most of these mascots are older, traditional mascots. They aren't common or current perceptions of anyone...but people are freaking out about them.
