The roads around the area I live in CA have been in horrible condition since I moved here from the Bay Area 8 years ago. Even at the peak of the strong economy, when crappy houses were selling for 400k, we "had no money" to fix the roads. But now, the entire valley and most of the state's roads are torn up even though were in a recession. Not only that, but they tear up the roads and then you don't see anyone working on them for months. So Obama just spends even MORE money just to find crap for people to do? Does this seem stupid to anyone else?

The previous funds that were allotted for improvements were squandered or stolen and thus the decaying infrastructure.
It's just that now there has been such an enormous increase in federal funny money, you'll see some high visibility projects being done to make it look like money well spent.

If you go all the way back to the Franklin Roosevelt administration, I think you'll find that a healthy percentage of the price of a gallon of gasoline is supposed to go towards maintaining our national highway system. (But, you know, the key words are supposed to.)

The money comes from China, I think they want the roads in good shape when they take over.
