I think there are a lot of non-religious folks that believe in ghosts, goblins, demons, etc. Look at some of the movies hollywood is turning out nowadays--especially with Halloween right around the corner.
The article didn't say if they were religious--or what religion. Maybe they were catholic (the prominent religion in that area), or maybe they were into voodoo. Heck...maybe they weren't normally religious, but ate too many tostitos while watching a horror movie before bed.
