Dog attack deaths and maimings, 1982-2009 for the USA and Canada:

By compiling U.S. and Canadian press accounts between 1982 and 2009, Merritt Clifton, editor of Animal People, determined the breeds most responsible for serious injury and death:

The combination of pit bulls, rottweilers, presa canarios, and their mixes:
  • 80% of attacks that induce bodily harm
  • 69% of attacks to children
  • 83% of attack to adults
  • 68% of attacks that result in fatalities
  • 74% that result in maiming
Discussion notes:
  • Even if the pit bull category was "split three ways," attacks by pit bulls and their closest relatives would still outnumber attacks by any other breed.
  • Pit bulls attack adults nearly as often as they attack children, a characteristic not shared by any other breed.

Another pit bull thread, how original. If the media publicized every dog attack/bite regardless of breed, you'd want all dogs banned.

It's called responsible parenting. Leaving a child alone with ANY animal is not advisable. From the article:
Quote:
"I would never recommend leaving an animal alone with an infant, period," Animal Control Officer Robert Currey said. "Even if it's a family pet, you never know how they're going to react to a new, basically, living being in the residence with them -- which is basically the animal's territory."

It's important to note that there are many smaller breeds known to be more aggressive, the difference being they don't kill you when they attack. They don't get the public scrutiny, media coverage and other things the larger dogs do.

Animals are animals... there is a reason why animals are not humans but humans can be animals...

So sad!

And in a separate attack on Monday, a 5 yr. old Florida boy was attacked by a pit bull who then was shot after charging at police officers.

I know that even if 10 children were fatally attacked by pit bulls in Florida on the same day, there are those people who would continue to say, "It's all about how you raise them."

Yet, as the number of children severely wounded or killed by this particular breed continues to rise, those words sound more hollow.
How many times to you dog haters have to be told that it is NOT the breed, it's how they are raised, until you swallow that line of BS.

There is no place in society for a fully-automatic assault dog. Grind em up and melt em down.

Each year, 4.7 million Americans are bitten by dogs. These bites result in approximately 16 fatalities; about 0.0002 percent of the total number of people bitten. These relatively few fatalities offer the only available information about breeds involved in dog bites. There is currently no accurate way to identify the number of dogs of a particular breed, and consequently no measure to determine which breeds are more likely to bite or kill.

Am I wrong?

Of course any breed of dog can be aggressive. But let's look at the statistics here. Year after year, it has been documented that pit bulls are responsible for more fatalities than any other breed by a mile. Rottweilers come in second. Over and over again.

The reason we hear so much about pit bulls attacking and seriously injuring or killing people is because they do it so much more often than any other breed..... This is not conspiracy or irrationality. It's just fact. A fact that some are willing to ignore. No matter how many people are killed. And that really is irrational.
