This is seriously pathetic. The time for Unions has come and gone. While the economy is in shambles and people are without work, these idiots are out getting cosmetic procedures - on taxpayer dollars.
They were only skin treatments... facial peels? I'm not defending it but facial peels aren't boob jobs.
And it says they were probably rushing to get them done -- "the union has agreed to give up the benefit in the next contract and said teachers may be simply rushing to use the benefit while they can."
(That was way down at the bottom, though... trust Fox for your headline-only news....)
It's good that the union is giving up a relative-luxury benefit during tough times; why not report it that way? Same result.
You've got to remember, someone has to agree to the unions demands.
Is it the Unions fault that they get to much sometimes? Or is it the fault of someone who didn't say no?
The auto industry is the perfect example. You have all of those unskilled union workers, mostly working on an assembly line. At Delphi, there were some people getting paid over 75 dollars an hour to put chips on a board, in an assembly line, with high school educations.
Were they serious? Is that job worth that much? No. It would have been far simpler to let the union strike, and hire people who want to work, correct?
And auto manufacturers have learned, which is why they are opening more and more plants in the south. This area is less of a union controlled area, and the cost of living is cheaper. People in the south are happy with a job making 18 an hour, with benefits. While up north people wouldn't work for less than 22 sometimes. Thats nuts.
As far as the schools, the reason the public school system has so many bad teachers is that its government controlled. Want to fix the public school system? Allow parents to get a school voucher, and use the school they choose to use. That would end bad teaching quickly. It would end teaching unions stronghold on a government job. It would allow parents to take their government money for their child to private schools and private teachers. Don't like the results of your teachers, go to a different one. Want to home school? Cool, you get to keep the money for yourself, as long as your child can meet a government standardized test.
Unions have benefits in certain jobs. Do you really want to outlaw them? I didn't read the article of the Constitution that said "there shall be no union", and as such, there should be no law against them.
The Buffalo Fiscal Stability Authority found that last year's costs for elective procedures such as chemical peels and other skin treatments were up $8 million over 2004's $1 million tab for cosmetic surgery.
The total is $9M since 2004. They had $1M worth in 2004, then $0 from 2005 to 2008, then $8M in 2009.
Unless the benefit was gone from the contract from 2005-2008.

Better solution: eliminate public funded education entirely. Government's only function is to act as a credentials data bank and testing agency.
Parents can educate their children by whatever means they choose / afford. The children who pass examination get credentials, regardless of how they learned the material.

Who cares if it was at the bottom or top of the article? They got caught and now they are giving up the benefit.... it is called back paddling. And how hypocritcal and typical to defend them saying it is 'only facial peels'! And rushing to get them done - of course they are rushing to take advantage of the taxpayers dollars as much as they can. Again, PATHETIC.
So a few Unions are out of line, and it's BAN all Unions??
You have quite a number of Americans working for nickles and dimes, while their company CEOs make millions.
Shall we ban all CEOs too?

Could you please quote the sentence that told you they're giving up the benefit as a result of "getting caught"? If they knew a year ago to rush to get all this done, then they didn't just now get "caught." Although the union guy's words are ambiguous.
While you're at it, please also quote where it says what percentage of the procedure cost is taxpayer-funded.
Why is it hypocritical to say they're only facial peels? They are only facial peels. edit - never mind, $18K is an awful lot of face peeled off. But it still doesn't indicate how much of that was paid for by the patient.
Are you serious, "who cares" if the enragement-device is at the top and the facts are at the bottom?

They abused it, they lost it. For that reason you want the Police and Fire Unions where you live decertified? Thanks for your support
Truly sorry, but no Union support here. I have watched unions destroy the company my father worked 40 years for.
