Thanks for that data point Memphis1979.

So if indeed it is free then why do we still have all these single parent moms on welfare and food stamps ?

Is birth control preventative care ? If so then it should be free..right ?

Problem here is that they passed the bill but didn't define the conditions so now they are debating it. I do like how Mikulski says "clear intent". If it was clear then why didn't it say so in the bill ? Nothing like some gray wording so that you can go back later and argue points.

This could get pretty costly pretty quick....

Free Birth Control May Be On Horizon - Arklatex Politics News Story - KTBS Shreveport (http://www.ktbs.com/politics/25582774/detail.html - broken link)
"A panel of experts advising the government meets in November to begin considering what kind of preventive care for women should be covered at no cost to the patient, as required under President Barack Obama's overhaul.

Sen. Barbara Mikulski, D-Md., author of the women's health amendment, says the clear intent was to include family planning."
Fine, free sterilizations, no free reversals. Rather than doling out monthly medication for BC allow a one time choice, sterile or not. Pretty simple. That would likely cut down on the # of taxpayer funded abortions.

Obamacare needs to be repealed in its entirety and the massive Socialist structure of a buraucracy created to administer must be defunded, ASAP.

botox isn't preventative care.

Preventative means to prevent something, not to fix it. Preventative cancer screenings, preventative heart and blood pressure checks, preventative checks for diabetes.

Preventative care costs a fraction of what regular care does. The whole point about "free" preventative care is that it costs us less up front to prevent the condition then it does to fix it later.

Catholic Church and Birth Control

Because sex is wrong, and you shouldn't take birth control because it only gives you a license to do whats wrong in Gods eyes. Don't you know?

No seriously, it boils down to family and religious decisions for some people. Some groups believe they shouldn't take medicine at all.

But it was only a $15 copay before.
People with insurance couldn't afford $15 ?
That's a pretty sad statement about working people with insurance who cannot afford a $15 copay.

The theory is that it costs less. Do you have links to prove it costs less on a national scale when administered by the government and paid for by the taxpayer?

Nope, didn't think so. It may cost less in private practice for people who choose prevention and are motivated thusly. I doubt it costs less via socialized medicine.

But yet a few posts back you said free birth control would decrease the situation.

We're talking about people WITH insurance.
That suburban mom who takes her 16 year old daughter to get birth control would have done it even if it costs. Now it will be free to her.

They can afford the $25 for a case of cigarettes, those Jordan Air tennis shoes, and HD cable TV on a 52" plasma screen. It is a choice not to afford the $15 co-pay when buying other things and living in debt.

HMO's destroyed healthcare in this country. We should return to plans where everyone is mostly responsible for their bills and maybe people would take care of themselves.

All "socialized medicine" costs less, and most gets better results. Better and more accessible prevetitive care may be part of that.
