In the Tea Party narrative, victory at the polls means a new American revolution, one that will "take our country back" from everyone they disapprove of. But what they don't realize is, there's a catch:

This is America, and we have an entrenched oligarchical system in place that insulates us all from any meaningful political change. The Tea Party today is being pitched in the media as this great threat to the GOP; in reality, the Tea Party is the GOP. What few elements of the movement aren't yet under the control of the Republican Party soon will be, and even if a few genuine Tea Party candidates sneak through, it's only a matter of time before the uprising as a whole gets castrated, just like every grass-roots movement does in this country.

Its leaders will be bought off and sucked into the two-party bureaucracy, where its platform will be whittled down until the only things left are those that the GOP's campaign contributors want anyway: top-bracket tax breaks, free trade and financial deregulation.

The original Tea Party has been taken over by Republicans IMO because of the image Bush left on the Republican Party.
Early on it was a grassroots movement to tell government that the taxpayers were against TARP and the bailing out of the banks.
When it gained steam Republicans started to jump on the Tea Party bandwagon.

It's sad that so many people are being duped. Now there are some true Tea Party movements that are local in nature but for the most part once Palin showed her face at these rallies it was a nail in the true Tea Party.

That was a good article OP..I always enjoy the Rolling Stone articles on the economy and government.

Up front, I haven't read the article yet...but what's the surprise about the Tea Party/GOP connection? It was written about and discussed relentlessly for the last year.

Dems will be Dems and libs will be nuts. What pissed off a lot of Tea Party folk was the GOP acting like Dems, especially the mush-mouthed Lindsey Graham stroking Elena Kagan, ensuring a Tea Party run at him in 2014.

People like to accuse the TP of demanding ideological purity, but I think its more a matter of the GOP standing for something more than the values of the Democratic Party.

The Tea Party: the re-branding effort by Republicons so they don't have to answer for their mistakes from 2000-2008.

if the tea party canidates are really separate I was expecting to see a different color represented on Tues. night when those canidates won their seats, but curiously they were all red. Hmmm....

You are not addressing the issue. Please explain to me how this is not going to come to pass. Is the USA not run by corporations? Haven't you noticed that we have been under only two party rule as of late...like forever? Do you think that the GOP will concede and give up their corporate sugar daddies? Are you people that naive? Please explain why the tea people were funded and backed by the very people that have been lining their pockets with lobbyist money. How utterly ignorant to not see what on going on here. Ignorance must truly be bliss. This has nothing to do with bias, this is factual and it sucks for all Americans. Our representatives are on the take from big business and there is not a damn thing that any Tea Partier can do about it...end of story!
