From the Washington Post...The BP oil rig explosion and spill wasn't about anyone purposely trading money for safety, investigators on a special presidential commission said Monday. Spill panel: No evidence of saving $ over safety (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/11/08/AR2010110805051.html - broken link)
Looky here...maybe Representative Joe Barton was right to apologize.
They had a oil recovery plan from Alaska, talking about walrus's in the Gulf of Mexico, from a doctor who was fired from the University where he taught, before he signed off on the study.
The Commission had no power to Subpoena documents, thanks to our favorite Senate filibuster group. So it boiled down he said/he said. It's kind of hard to get evidence that way.

But if the MMS had done their job there would have been all those inspection reports.
It will be interesting to see how this whole story works itself out. With the well capped and the intense day to day scrutiny by the MSM now diverted by anything else, the fervor of that time is over. Maybe not in the affected areas, but I suspect most people up North haven't given this a second thought since the well was capped.
Cooler heads in DC will be looking this over and figuring how to assess blame...today was a beginning.

Well its sure on my mind daily.
I'm about facts and understanding what happened, but a report saying that BP didn't cut corners, when its blatantly obvious just from their recovery plan alone that they did, is bull.
The guys in DC can't figure this out with no subpoena power.
Its going to be whipped under the rug like countless other environmental screw up.

Since the Republican Party blocked subpoena power for the congressional committee investigating this spill we'll never know what REALLY happened.
Yet another example of corporate power dominating government as the expense of justice and the American people’s right to know.
The left wingers here seem to have information that the committee didnt have. Maybe some of you should call them and provide them with the all important documents which have allowed you to pronounce guilt. Until then, you simply dont know crap as usual...

Who are you kidding? In the fevers of that time Obama could have blasted anything through. Maybe the Democrats don't want the panel to have the subpoena authority. The GOP did offer in that AOL news link you cited...Don Stewart, spokesman for Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, countered that an amendment granting subpoena power passed the Senate Energy Committee with Republican support. He also said subpoena power for the commission is included in the alternative version of the energy bill offered by the GOP.
Reflexively blaming the GOP is an easy and thoughtless game.
