The former college student who guessed his way into Sarah Palin's Yahoo e-mail account during the 2008 U.S. presidential election was sentenced to a year and a day in prison Friday.

David Kernell's lawyers had been hoping for probation only; federal prosecutors had asked for an 18-month sentence.

The judge in the case recommended that Kernell serve his time at a halfway house rather than federal prison, but that decision is up to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons, the U.S. Department of Justice said. Following his one-year sentence, Kernell must serve three years' probation.

here's hoping for prison rather than some namby-pamby halfway house

Yeah ... cos he is clearly a danger to society. At least in jail he can learn some useful things like breaking into people's houses.

since when has prison been reserved solely for those who pose 'a danger to society' ?

What was he supposed to get, a stern talking-to and a hug to let him know he's still loved? Hacking is serious business so if he gets just a "no-no" slap on the wrist, then the lack of a prison term might send a message to him and others that hacking isn't taken very seriously. When one considers the damage that hackers have done and are capable of, I'd say this chump's poor judgement COULD potentially be a menace to society. Sorry if your conventional ideas of menace and purpose of prison don't jive with modern and continuously evolving concepts.

Maybe it sucks for him that he's being made an example of, but the intentions of malicious hacking, regardless of the extent of actual damage incurred or lack thereof, is very serious.

He'll end up serving less than half of that on "good behavior".

On the darker side of things old boy will be in debt & have a felony criminal record following him for the rest of his life.

Sucks to be either one of them.

Oh well...they've screwed themselves.

Easy target!

Prison will eat this kid alive...literally.

He'll be a different person when he gets out that's for sure.

Prison tends to do that to people.
