All you folks calling this common know nothing of history. This was the first artillery strike on South Korean soil since the end of the Korean war.

On top of everything, a CIVILIAN (civilians WERE injured) town was targeted in this attack (check out news reports, one guy didn't get blown to pieces by a shell by about 200 feet or so, caught on video).

So no, this is not the same as every other incident that has occurred between North and South Korea since the end of the Korean war.

I believe a swift and tactical strike should be carried out to neutralize all North Korean artillery units along the border, particularly those near Incheon and Seoul. Intelligence over the years ought to provide us enough information to be able to hit most of their artillery units with devastating force before they could react. This would send a VERY strong message to NK. Otherwise, one day they may "accidentally" launch an artillery salvo at a major city.

There have been other attacks by North Koreans versus South Korea including the sinking of a South Korean naval vessel last year killing 40 to 50 South Korean sailors. Again there are HUNDREDS of artillery batteries targeting Seoul. No airstrike is going to knock out all those batteries without SIGNIFICANT SOUTH KOREAN CIVILIAN CASUALTIES. The South Koreans KNOW THIS.

This is why keyboard commondos don't plan military operations.

China really wants nothing to do with North Korea's military aggression toward South Korea. China and South Korea are trading partners and both countries benefit economically from the exchange.

After reading the AP article on this I wouldn't quite call SK the innocent victim.

NK warned SK to stop drills
SK answered by firing shots towards NK but not at NK in disputed waters
NK retaliated by firing directly at the island.

By no means am I taking NK's side here..just noting that SK fired shots first in response to NK words.

This shelling by the north is a direct result of the South's lack of response when the norht sunk a South Korean warship earlier this year. If you don't stand up to a thug, you will get more thuggish behavior.

The United States should pull its 30,000 troops away from the DMZ down to the southern half of South Korea. From there they could still react quickly to aggression but they would be out of range of the Norhts NUMEROUS artillery and rocket pieces. Where they are now they are, sadly, not much more than human shields and would suffer high casualties in a North Korean first strike.

I would like to see a few weeks of airstrikes to destroy the North's artillery capability. They can't invade the south because they lack the logistical capability to move their bloated army. They are a defensive army with tons of artillery. Destroy their artillery and they have nothing left. Of course, the capital of the south is within range of that artillery so they would suffer casualties, which is why the South's politicians don't want to take action.

1 Redeploy US troops out of artillery range
2 air strikes to destroy artillery
3 Optional land invasion to change regime and finally end the Korean war which has been in effect for over half a century.

Can't be done without China coming to N Korea's defense - that is why nothing has changed in 50 years.

The Korean war was started by N Korea but when MacArthur turned the tide China pored in over 1/2 million troops and the war continued for another 2 years.

Korean War dead - military & civilian
South Korea - 595,000
North Korea - 1,316,579
China - 500,000
United States - 33,000
United Kingdom - 1,078
Turkey - 717
Canada - 310

The options are either to wait it out and hope for a USSR style collapse (perhaps with an assist) or do something now - before young 28 year old Jong takes over and consolidates his power. If action is taken now it can only be done with China's approval and assistance. NK is the unruly teenage son of China who is bothering the neighbors and making things difficult for China. To me the only way out of this mess without mass casualties & international conflict is to let NK stay under China's sphere of influence - but without the mad man & his son in charge. A quick takedown of Jong and - while Korean re-unification is long range goal - in the interim let China administer the state. The US can barely hold its own in Afghanistan & Iraq and is no position to march into N Korea. The alternatives to co-operating with China are just continuation of the status quo or a bloody war. Yeah, I know, I'm sounding like Chamberlain - but in Chamberlains' defense England at the time was in no position to go to war or make ultimatums and he bought time to build up the military.

The people in N. Korea are starving and literally dying on the streets.
An all out war is probably what NK is looking for to better their situation.

Guns before food for the poor.
That is what it's all about these days.
