The point that everyone is missing is this. It IS illegal to have stolen property in YOUR possession! Why can't people understand this? BTW, every government on the panet is corrupt and America is nowhere near most of them.

Federal authorities are investigating whether WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange violated criminal laws in the group's release of government documents, including possible charges under the Espionage Act, sources familiar with the inquiry said Monday.

Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. said the Justice Department and Pentagon are conducting "an active, ongoing criminal investigation.'' Others familiar with the probe said the FBI is examining everyone who came into possession of the documents, including those who gave the materials to WikiLeaks and also the organization itself. No charges are imminent, the sources said, and it is unclear whether any will be brought.

WikiLeaks founder could be charged under Espionage Act

Yes they were classified. There are elements WITHIN our fed gov. that are releasing this information. That PFC didn't have this kind of access, he fell on someone's sword to cover for them. This is ALL intentional and spearheaded by the top. Why do you think they can't find a charge for Assange? They are buying time to find a way to let him go while putting on a show that they actually care about this. If they truly wanted him, they'd have him. He is illegally holding Federal US property that could and will do damage to this country. We can put an American on the CIA kill list for ALLEGEDLY aiding in terrorism without a trial or Congressional approval, but we can't do anything about this guy who is definitely guilty of having stolen CLASSIFIED Federal US property in his possession? I don't buy it for one second. There is a conspiracy going on here.

Interesting, never thought of it that way..

Possession of Stolen Property Law & Legal Definition

The offense of property possession of stolen property is made up of two parts. First, a person charged with this offense must have property that was (or was partly) gained by theft, fraud, or any other crime. Second, the person must have known that the property was stolen or gained by fraud. Also, if the prosecutor can show that it was obvious that a reasonable person would have thought the property was stolen and the accused failed to investigate whether it was stolen or not, he or she can be found guilty of possession of stolen property.

Sure sounds like wikileaks

From a New York Times article:

Justice Department prosecutors have been struggling to find a way to indict Mr. Assange since July, when WikiLeaks made public documents on the war in Afghanistan. But while it is clearly illegal for a government official with a security clearance to give a classified document to WikiLeaks, it is far from clear that it is illegal for the organization to make it public.
I'm loving this. even the DOJ has to admit that their character assassination of Assange is totally baseless.

I'd like to see examples of information that could get innocent people killed. Not information about cobalt mines in the Congo or insulin plants in Denmark. All we have now is the usual suspects parotting what they've heard from the talking box.

In recent months, WikiLeaks gave the entire collection of cables to four European publications — Der Spiegel in Germany, El País in Spain, Le Monde in France and The Guardian. The Guardian shared the cable collection with The New York Times.
Since Nov. 28, each publication has been publishing a series of articles about revelations in the cables, accompanied online by the texts of some of the documents. The publications have removed the names of some confidential sources of American diplomats, and WikiLeaks has generally posted the cables with the same redactions.

It is exactly what it is. Why can't the Feds file any charges? The answer is simple, they don't want to.

Be VERY careful what you wish for, those of you demanding something be done....

Publishing those documents is not illegal — or at least, not yet, which is why Senator Joe Lieberman (I-Conn), the chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs committee, has put forward his proposed SHIELD law (which stands for Securing Human Intelligence and Enforcing Lawful Dissemination), which would make it a crime to publish leaked classified information if doing so endangered U.S. agents or was otherwise not in the national interest. And this law would not just apply to WikiLeaks, but potentially any mainstream or online publication or media outlet that chose to publish any of the information, since — as I have tried to argue before — WikiLeaks is effectively a media entity.
