I feel bad for your friend that her father could have been so thoughtless. Many of my friends and I are not exchanging gifts this year and giving to charities in lieu of gifts to each other. For my friends and family in need I am giving cash in a Christmas card.

She opened the box, only to find a set of wine glasses. Thoughtful maybe, but hardly helpful considering her situation.

Still does not compute.

Sometimes on the price is right they give away old lady dining rooms and dishware sets to 19 year olds.

Whether someone has a need for the gift or not, they're all happy to get it, and I bet unemployed poor people watching Oprah at 4:00 PM (working people can rarely watch Oprah) would be very happy to get those gifts too. It's a recession. Not the end of the world.

The receiver of the gift can donate same to charity if they please.

I am sure a family in a homeless shelter would love to have a designer watch or a cruise.

I'm sure a family in a homeless shelter has more important things to do than watch Oprah and bemoan that she didn't buy them a house. Which - she HAS done, in the past.

Don't hate just because you didn't think to show up at the show and get yourself a free cruise.

Yet another judgemental person who has no clue about me or my character. How do you know I never won a fantabulous prize form Oprah?

Exactly. Oprah quiety does a lot of things like that.

So why would Oprah last year think it was inappropriate to bestow such lavish gifts due to the lean economy and then decide to go forward this year (still a lean economy) for her season finale?

I don't know why she thinks what she does, but except for the promotional items, it's her money.
