That's so incredibly wasteful. And while I would NEVER support government intervention, I do hope that the focus of our society moves away from such obscene wastefulness.

We should definitely spend more time studying John Stuart Mill and Utilitarianism, as a society. This country only adopted half of his philosphy, the militant individualism, but didn't adopt the self-regulating portion of his philosophy.
because on the weekend that same suv isn't carrying a full family while towing a boat or camper or anything....

Actually, although I am a free enterprise, pro-business kind of guy, I have some sympathies for your concern about fuel usage. I am not in favor of terminating these vehicles, but a surtax of 3-5% of purchase price for vehicles with a combined EPA mileage of below 25 MPG would be OK with me, with the pool of money redistributed as a 3-5% tax credit of the purchase price for vehicles with a combined EPA mileage above 40 MPG.
so if you need a truck or suv for towing, you are going to subsidize someone elses car purchase???
Sounds like complete socialism to me!

Not for anything, but I have never seen good looking guy at the wheel of a Hummer. They are usually kind of small and dorky and appear to be using the vehicle to get attention that they would not get otherwise. No offense to your friend, but that is my impression of a Hummer and their owners.
Ridiculous. All around. Yet, I know that you're not alone.

Your irrational hatred for Hummers has led to the end of a friendship. Don't you think that's a bit extreme?

And you believe that Hummer drivers are "kind of small and dorky"? Even the women? And why do you think that people own them for the attention? Have you considered that most people buy vehicles because they just like them?

Course, I tried hauling 2500lb bails of hay to the cattle last winter in a Camry, just didn't work. Tried hauling cattle to market in a Privia. Just didn't work. But I don't have enough money to have a plethora of vehicles to pick from so I drive my pickup. Year round.

So lets see. You want to charge me an extra 3-5% to purchase this luxury. I ain't going to pay it. I'll just raise the price of my beef to offset the expenses.

Speaking of expenses. There's a tax at the fuel pump to pay for our highways and byways. Seems that you, with your hybred, arean't paying your fair share to keep up our roads. I'm paying it for you. Seeings how I spend about 80% of my time in the weeds out on the ranch and not on the highways that I help to pay for. So I"m footing the bill for that too. Guess I'd better raise the price of beef some more to offset that expense.

I think they should tax the hybreds 3-5% so they can pay for the highways they're getting away with not paying for.

Look, I'm all for good gas milage and saving fuel as best we can. I bought a 4 wheeler and I use it to check my cattle and fences and do minor hauling around the place. It gets about 3 hours per gallon of travel. Also, when I selected my big ole truck, I got a diesel because they're so much better then a gas rig.

And you want to penalize me. Go ahead. But don't ***** about the cost of groceries next year.
I bet they'll be crying when obama passes a animal fart tax to combat global warming. But wait, he wouldn't do that, he said he wouldn't tax us middle class people....

This has nothing to do with Obama.

Maybe the world is more complex than you realize. There are Republicans who own Priuses and Democrats who own Hummers.

Not complete socialism at all, I want to encourage the improvement in mileage of larger vehicles too. It isn't a "I want everyone to buy Prius" idea.

If enough folks bought higher mileage vehicles, wouldn't that ultimately reduce the gas cost for your truck?

Personally I get angry because I ride a bicycle for transportation
and get no tax credits like a guy in Prius does.
I'd trust Satan more than a government agency to develop policy on transportation or anything else.

Ah, another case of seeing the world through Starbuck's-colored glasses, complete with a double-shot of environmentally-conscious mediocrity, and topped with a froth of narrow-minded rationale.

Woe be unto he that shall drive an SUV! (sarcasm intended!)

I went to a townhall meeting yesterday featuring Gavin Newsom (mayor of San Francisco and poster boy for same-sex marriage in California). He's running for governor.

He spent about 15 minutes talking about how we need to ban plastic bags in California and promote "no-flow" toilets (i.e. no water). The audience approved with enthusiastic applause.

I drove my Hummer H3 there. I had to be a bit concerned about it being vandalized while I was there, but luckily, that didn't happen.

I'm mostly a Democrat, but the environmental issues get too much attention, in my opinion.
