BANGKOK, Thailand — For teen boys who prefer to dress as girls at one rural high school in Thailand, taking a bathroom break no longer means choosing between "male" and "female" restrooms. There's now a "transvestite toilet."
I went to Bangkok for R&R during my tour of duty in Viet-Nam. It is absolutely true that Bangkok has whatever perverted pleasures one's mind can conjure up in spades! It is truly the "Perversion Capital" of the world!

That will soon be any US city the way we are going. Bangkok is about 10-20 years ahead of the US in terms of social progressivism.

Wouldn't social progressivism dictate that we have only one bathroom for all?

As the ex wife of a transgender man, I would love to see a third private, or family type bathroom, where they can go. As a woman, I do not really want transgender males in the ladies room, but that is where they go. It was a real source of conflict for the two of us, because you can support many things in your private life, but when you are ina public setting, it is just not a good thing to be unsure who is in the stall next to you.

Is that what your ex husband would want? Would he want to continue to be considered something other than a woman?

Since he had not made the physical change, he was living in two worlds. Living in vegas, it was easier because they have lots of family or private restrooms.

I think something to consider is that in the Thai culture, being transgendered is not that big of a deal. If I'm not mistaken, they believe that a mistake was made during reincarnation where a female soul accidently went to a male body?
Anyways, the Thai perspective on this isn't merely 'socially progressive', it is deeply rooted in their culture.

The Kampang School in northeastern Thailand conducted a survey last term that showed more than 200 of the school's 2,600 students considered themselves transgender, said school director Sitisak Sumontha.

Um.. thats almost 10% of the population.. Whats up with that..

One of my best friends is Thai, living in Germany now, and she says that beyond the reincarnation thing (which she affirmed), in the Thai prostitution industry transgender males are particularly prized by foreign visitors.

@Steve Hazzard: Thank gawd you're a Vietnam (era in my case) vet like me: That's narrow-minded thinking in re: to your comments about Thailand. And who, my friend, was visiting a lot of those "perverts"? American GIs I bet (as well as lots of foreign tourists.) When someone is born in a body that doesn't match their internal emotional/brain-centered image (no expert on the subject), I'm glad that there's a society that's willing to accept them (as did many American Indian tribes that considered them connections to both genders...special warriors in some cases...and sacred medicine men in others.) Until we can clean up our own mess with crime, etc., we shouldn't be pointing fingers at others. THREE CHEERS FOR THE THAIS!
