It's as different as McDonald's is to Nobu. Coincidently, it's also similiar. They're both places where people can eat, for example.

You received service when you went into Denny's to pick up your order. That is not the same as a drive through window at a fast food restaurant. Maybe the server should have handed you your dinner on a plate with a to go container you could pack yourself.

got this strange idea. If you don't like Starbucks prices don't by their coffee and if you don't want to tip then don't

The only time that I tip is when I sit down in a restaurant and I'm served by a waiter. I ignore all cups and trays in other establishments. I don't know when this ridiculous trend started, but I don't follow it.

When a service person ASKS pointedly "what about the tip?" - then sorry, you're not getting one. A tip is GIVEN not demanded.

But it is getting ridiculous. I despise the mandatory automatic gratuities that some places add to the check. It goes against the whole idea of tipping. I will also write a big fat zero on the bill at places where you prepay and offer you to tip before any kind of service is rendered. I will leave a cash tip only after I am done on the table.
I love it when these places are outed. It just shows how bad they are screwing their employees.

Yep. I usually tip well. Hell, I've tipped a Subway employee before. That sandwich looked just like the picture on the wall. I kid you not. That young man was the Da Vinci of sandwiches or something.

so let me get this straight... you're upset that you are made to feel like you should tip in circumstances where you feel you shouldn't.. and then you don't tip.. and you're upset that it has to be like that?

sounds like you exercised your freedom to do whatever the hell you want...
if it makes you feel guilty, it's your problem not theirs...

if you say it doesn't make you feel guilty.. then quit b*tching..and do what you gotta do...and let them do what they gotta do...

Don't get me wrong, I'll tip a bartender for making an actual drink not popping off the tab of a beer and handing it to me.
Also, wait staff has to automatically give a percentage of their tips over to the bartenders (at least they do where I live). If there is bus staff, they have to tip them out as well.

And if this thread bothers you, quit b*tching and ignore it! This is a forum in which people can express their thoughts, it's not for weak people who can't read opinions. If you disagree with my opinion fine but at least have the courage to state that instead of whining about anonymous people stating opinions on an anonymous forum that is explicitly designed for that purpose. You migh as well walk into a casino and admonish people for wasting money.

I'm sure the drive thru barista is the same person every time and remembers your face through your car window

Except Starbucks employees don't rely on tips for their wages because they are paid full wages and benefits most notably health insurance. Perhaps you missed that point the hundred or so times that was mentioned in this thread! Furthermore the example you left about the person purchasing Dom and racking up a $1000 bill doesn't apply since no one in this thread is advocating not tipping but I can see you missed a lot of details like that in this thread.

Did the person who packed your food also refill your drinks, ask if you need additional items and bring them to you, and clean up after you? Also, at many restaurants, the person who packs your food is not the same person who rings up your order at the register.

Really, so the person at the drive through window at a fast food restaurant just hands you a hamburger in one hand and some bare french fries in your other. The burger is not wrapped individually, the fries are not placed in a container and both items are not placed in a sack with napkins, condiments and plastic utensils? Interesting

Here is a strange concept, how about we think before tipping? I know thinking is a lost art these days which is evident by your response. Nonetheless, if you enjoy putting your mind on autopilot and handing out money without bothering to think why so be it.
