Why have diagnoses of ADHD and Asperger's etc skyrocketed?

Here's your answer- they get on SSI:

With SSI program, a legacy of unintended side effects - The Boston Globe

Add to that all the other programs that they qualify for once they hit 18-21 and voila..it adds up to a fully paid for but minimal lifestyle.

To some 18 year olds this is perfect because they do not have to work or pay many bills and get plenty of government assistance.

And there's plenty other government programs that people qualify for and each program adds up.

Not that agree with all the ADHD stuff going on, but, how in the hell do you or I know what these people might be suffering from? We need better testing and not guessing which seems to be the case with ADHD. Aspergers I can not comment on since I really don't know what the affliction is.

I don't think you know what is going on in the school system.
ADHD is thrown around akin to the common cold and many doctors are only too quick to confirm and put kids on drugs.

You have teachers and principles in schools doing these semi-medical assessments and labeling these kids. Too many gullible parents that buy into the drug theory of "calming them down".

Get the kid on drugs and the schools are happy, the drug industry is happy and the parents are happy. A nation of drugged up zombies.

Yes there are kids that truly need to be on medication but there are many more that just have behavior problems and don't need to be.

Over 90% of the world's supply of Ritalin is used in America.
Ritalin is to kids what Viagra is to older men.

Oh I do know as one of my children has been a target since grade 1. That's why I included in my post more testing and not GUESSING.
He has passes all his school tests 90 or better all these years but they still push for him to be drugged. We have refused. Sure he is active but what little boy is not at that age? I would worry more about the ones who sit in a corner all day long. I agree with what you wrote but let me add that the school districts also receive more cash if they have more special needs children. Money makes the world go round.

Back to the original post. Not everything is a scam for benefits. As Happy Texan wrote it's the schools who push the diagnoses not the parents.

As a teacher, I was always extremely hesitant to use the term ADHD because so many other correctable problems can cause similar symptoms. For example, a kid eats a poor, very high sugar, diet. Get rid of the sweets, the kid is fine. I actually had one student who showed behavior problems when he didn't get enough sleep. I told his mother that he needed to go to bed earlier, then he was fine afterwards. Most boys are very active act a young age and need more frequent breaks, like recess. Schools get rid of recess, then you are going to have more behavior problems.

There are kids that need medication and do actually have ADHD. I think other things should be ruled out before that label is placed on a child. There are also other forms of treatment for ADHD. I hear there is a diet that works wonderfully for ADHD. Coffee actually works well for ADHD kids. Caffeine has a calming effect in an ADHD kid.

I don't think a kid with ADHD should get SSI. These kids can work when they get older and should be encouraged to do so. Good grief, we are giving out SSI checks like they're candy. I have actually met people my age who have been on SSI their whole life because they have a "back condition" yet they can play basketball, skateboard, and ride on motorcycles. I should mention they have never worked a day in their life even though they are 30.

My son too was targeted in elementary school and I fought it for 5 years.
Turned out none of the "educators" actually sat down to see what the problem was. I did though...PE and music were the two classes that were non-structured and my son did fine in the other structured classes.
Talk about egg on their faces when I pointed that out.

Some say Lombardi may of had ADHD or was Bipolar but he did pretty well. As for back conditions, those who really have a problem are the ones who suffer, those who go to lawyers instead of doctors are the ones who get the money then work construction and live like kings. I turned a few in to no avail, they still work and still live like kings.

Same here HT. Every meeting we go to they push and push but without any proof of illness. Thank God our doctor does not believe he has ADHD and stands by our side.
