They wouldn't be fat for very long if they were drafted.

I'd love to see that debate in 2012 as Christy would mop the floor with him and his ideology; another discussion though.

Simply stated, people can get into shape and shed pounds much more quickly than they can shed their liberal ideology. Thus, I think it is less dangerous, in regard to national security, to be overweight than it is to be a progressive liberal.

HNope, this legislation is about government control in the daily lives of Americans (and union paybacks). If long-term success was the goal incentivizing schools receiving federal monies by requiring nutrition courses be taught at elementary, middle, and high school levels as a part of the curriculum, as well as nutrition classes for those on Medicaid/food stamps, would have a greater effect.
lifelongMOgal !!! ... Outstanding Post !

Indeed ... Your last paragraph contains great wisdom !

It is truly a friggin shame that the so called "Towering Intellectuals" which inhabit the ole "Yankee WH" cannot arrive at the same logical conclusion that you have suggested above !

Good Show lifelongMOgal !!!

Thanks Y'ALL / Old Sgt. Lamar

Funny, I thought this thread was about the effect of obesity on our armed forces. Of course, there couldn't possibly be any security risks resulting from this sort of behavior, how, could there?

"Soldiers are dangerously starving themselves, gobbling diet pills and laxatives — even resorting to costly liposuction surgery — all to meet the Army's weight standards and avoid losing their careers, according to military personnel who spoke to Army Times."

Study: Soldiers use extreme methods to meet military weight rules - USATODAY.com

Amazing. People so want to indulge their blind hatred for the president and his family that they will choose to remain blind to what is happening around them, particularly if it is the President or Mrs. Obama who calls attention to the problem. But of course, trying to improve the health and welfare of U.S. citizens, particularly those who serve, is just another grand 'plot' to 'destroy' the country. Right.

I find it kind of funny that someone on page 1 said obese people were "mentally slow", especially when one considers that in just about every building in this country, the smartest guy in that building is the 300 pounder in the basement surrounded by all the computer stuff.

Dictating the content and frequency of school fundraiser bake sales is going to improve the "health and welfare" of this country? A bit of an aggrandizement don't you think? Nice attempt at trying to use the "health and welfare" phrase to try to encompase complete government control over individual liberty. FAIL!

Obviously your blind hatred for any suggested solutions by Conservatives keep you pigeon holed into believing all solutions begin and end with the federal government.

Can't rep you again yet, so I'll do so publicly.

Just what solutions do the conservatives have? All I've seen in this thread is ranting at the "government", "nanny state", etc for trying to control children's lives and take over the responsibility from parents, blah, blah, blah. The suggestions made are to "reinstate" PE, which has never been removed from most schools (and is forced excercise) and teach nutrition in schools like this is a new idea, when it was being done when I was in elementary school 50 years ago.

I could care less who she was giving a speech to. The truth is that there are a lot of FATTIES in the USA. Its a race blind phenomenon too. You have your white fatties and black fatties and hispanic fatties ...on and on and on. Its CLEARLY an issue. MANY AMERICANS ARE JUST PLAIN FAT.

What if a country full of Sumo wrestlers attacked us ?
THEN you'd be thankful for those 1 in 4 obese.

In all seriousness...the problem is with the food, not the people and I'm sure the government is well aware of that.
And with not much more you can do to smokers it's only natural that the next "victim" in line be picked so the government can regulate some more.

There's a fair amount of truth here. *Some* of the problem is with the people, but a lot of the problem is our food industry, no doubt.

We've become so acclimatized to sugar/salt it's insane! Has anyone been to other countries and noticed how much less sweet Coke or Pepsi is in Europe or the Middle East?

Not to mention that the vast majority of us don't walk anywhere, even when possible - because it's "inconvenient" or we're "in a hurry".

Also, don't forget to factor in economy. A simple trip to your grocery store will reconfirm that it is FAR cheaper to eat crap, than to buy decent, healthy foods. Plus, poorer folks are certainly much less able to afford gym memberships and personal trainers. Not to say you can't workout without a gym membership, but it's more of a challenge.
