The U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder recently sued the Berkely School District in Illinois for denying three whole weeks unpaid leave to Safoorah Khan, a Muslim middle school teacher wanting to attend the Hajj, the Mulim pilgrimage held yearly in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. The teacher resigned immediately after being denied and filed a complaint to the Department of Justice. Her school stated that her request was “not related to her professional duties.” However, Eric Holder claimed that this refusal violated the Civil Rights Act of 1964, ordering the Berkely School District to “reasonably accommodate the religious observances, practices and beliefs of employees and prospective employees.”
Eric Holder’s decision to pull this mindless stunt is ludicrous. Safoorah Khan signed a contract with the Berkely School District. Not only is her request an exceptionally long period of time, but also, it violates the contract she signed. I realize the important role of the teachers. They have much to teach the students and just losing a couple of days can make a difference. Why does her school district must accomaodate her religious belief when it violates the contract? A contract is a contract. Besides, acoording to Muslim belief, the Hajj only needs to be done once in a lifetime. So why now? This is America. If Safoorah Khan wants to perform her religious duty, then she should go back where she came from .

When is the last time US Attorney General of the DoJ did anything like this? I'll wait.

BTW, I'm sure that the schools policy is that no teacher may decide to take off in the middle of the school year for three weeks, whether they are paid not. I'm also sure the policy was made clear to this woman when she took the job.

If the system has granted LWOP to anyone else for anything other than illness (a trip, for example) they'll lose.

Would be kinda hard to run a school that way eh? If any teacher can suddenly request to up and leave for about a month, and then expects to just walk back into there job. That is until they decide to up and leave again.

Personally, I don't think anyone should have special consideration due to their religion. That includes the people who 'claimed' to be Christians at my old workplace so they could get Sundays off.

Wonder if Holder would do this for any other religious pilgrimage?

I highly doubt it.
