I really wish the overzealous right wing poster bots would get a firmware update.

Yeah, we can all live in cardboard boxes and pick cans out of trash bins for recycling. USA!

It is heading that direction, isn't it.

What would be the objection to unemployment compensation that conforms to state at-will employment laws and that federal doctrine, as a social safety net that could be more cost efficient than welfare?

Unfortunately, it is... since both the right and the left decided to help the corporate leaders in their plan to export all decent-paying jobs overseas in a short-term effort to boost profit margins. In this next generation, I'm sure they'll get to work on my eliminating all of the white collar jobs as well (except for their own).

There wouldn't be much difference, if any. If you subcontracted out a job you needed done and you liked the way that person did his job, my guess is that you would offer him some perks to keep him away from your competition. Perks could include bonuses, contributions to healthcare, or retirement, allowing a certain amount of sick leave or vacation.

As a subcontractor competing among many other subcontractors, you would sell your services by not only references and experience, but maybe you would be willing to do a job for the prime for less vacation days than your competition, or less contributions to your healthcare by the prime.

Then, there are the prime contractor and subcontractor trade associations that will look out for their members, and will set up rules and guidelines for dealing with each other. This will mean a more lucrative business for their members. Independents will be left to fend for themselves.

How is that different, in substance, than things are today?

NAFTA & the China Trade Act of 2000 were the nails in the coffin.
Can you find who signed those pieces of crap? Then you will find your smoking gun.

Please explain how self-employed individuals would produce automobiles, computer chips, digital cameras, and airliners.

The world was a hodge-podge of individual craftsmen a few centries ago. It was called the preindustrial world, where single men practiced a trade or tried to scratch a living off the farm.

Industrialization has made that economic model archaic, irrelevant, and unsupportable in today's world.
