This is not rationing. The FDA always had the option of disapproving this drug for breast cancer treatment. They are, in fact, following the recommendations of those who actually know a little bit about this sort of thing:

"The FDA approved Avastin for breast cancer in 2008 based on one study suggesting it halted the spread of breast cancer for more than five months when combined with chemotherapy. But follow-up studies showed that the delay lasted no more than three months, and patients suffered dangerous side effects."

Avastin shouldn't be used for breast cancer, FDA says - Health - Cancer - msnbc.com

The question people really should be asking is how did it get approved after only one study?

I do have to ask though, why is this getting so much press and this following story next to none? You want real "death panels"? Well, here you go:

The Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) announced yesterday that it would ration the late-stage cancer drug Avastin for breast cancer patients.

Susan B. Komen Foundation for a Cure: Komen for the Cure’s president, Elizabeth Thompson said that the organization is concerned about the potential impact on women who are benefitting from Avastin if the FDA ultimately removes its approval for the drug for breast cancer treatment. “We want to be sure that women who are using Avastin, and for whom it is working, can continue to have access to it, that their insurers will continue to pay for it and that the drug’s manufacturer, Genentech/Roche, continues making the drug available to women through its patient support programs and considers an expanded access program.”

Sally Pipes, Pacific Research Institute: “The FDA claims its decision had nothing to do with Avastin’s cost and was based solely on the drug’s medical effectiveness. This isn’t believable. Every year about 40,000 American women die from breast cancer. Avastin is the last hope for many not to meet that fate. While the drug is costly, it often provides immense benefits to patients.”

It is not being removed from the market (at this time) and will not have an immediate impact on treatment for breast cancer. It is being reviewed.

The FDA adds and removes drugs on a regular basis.
Would you prefer drugs that are ineffective or dangerous left on the market?
I guess so.

More whine from the right of the forum.

No, it's childish to think that someone who disagrees with you is part of some evil conspiracy to kill old and sick people. That's actually sick thinking. People get into politics people they care and want to make a difference.

Are the far left liberals right on most things? No I don't think so, but I also don't think they are trying to kill off old people and sick people.

Try learning to debate ideas instead of just spewing out some junk. It makes your arguments look weak.

I think, given that the member of Congress who drafted H.R. 3200 read and take seriously people like Klien, Yglesias, and Singer, we should be very troubled by Section 1233 of H.R. 3200. The section, titled “Advanced Care Planning Consultation” requires senior citizens to meet at least every 5 years with a doctor or nurse practitioner to discuss dying with dignity.

As usual, chemo drugs is ALL ABOUT THE MONEY. If it worked, then 40,000 people would not be dying from breast cancer....how obvious is that?
In breast cancer, the drug hasn’t extended patients’ lives at all in several studies.
… some researchers are wondering if after Avastin is stopped, cancer cells spread more aggressively than before, dulling the drug’s effect. Such a “rebound effect” could explain why Avastin therapy is not resulting in bigger survival gains even as the drug makes pictures on imaging scans look better.
You’ll remember that Avastin was one of the driving forces behind Roche’s acquisition of Genentech. Roche closed that deal for $95 a share — before the results of a big Avastin trial came out.

Well if you actually read the whole quote it says:

Sally Pipes, Pacific Research Institute: “The FDA claims its decision had nothing to do with Avastin’s cost and was based solely on the drug’s medical effectiveness. This isn’t believable. So many more would die! 40,000 is still to many women. If it was something that affected men would the thought process be different! Women with cancer dont care about the politics of a drug only if it works or not!
Susan B Koman know a bit about this sort of thing as it is what they do!
