The US should ban ALL funding of countries that practice these types of marriages. If they are performed in this country by immigrants from primitive countries, then the older "spouse" should be imprisoned and/or fined. Problem solved. Needless resources spent with our tax dollars.
So if a powerful country such as ours doesn't take a stand against the forced marriage of children to adults, what kind of message are we then sending?
As long as we don't allow it in the US who cares?
We still do have much influence over other countries that allow this to continue, if we took a stand against it maybe, just maybe, some of those places would want to keep in our good graces & stop these abominations.
An 11 yr. old forced to marry a 40 yr.old who can do what he wishes with her?
To say I am disappointed in the 'party of family values' on this one is an understatement.
BTW this bill would not have cost one red cent.
Would this be anyone under 18? I wouldn't support banning that.
Latinas culturally will have many of their first babies at 15 or younger and often love older men. I can't wait for someone to tell me how this bill has the power to make that change.

There are only a few places in the USA where a 30 year old can marry a 12 year old. I think maybe Alabama, Mississippi and New Hampshire. But even in those states the girl has to consent. Georgia does not allow that anymore.

Then maybe you know...what would this bill have done and how would the money have been spent? Please explain why you are dissapointed. Surely you know.
Excellent, kudos to the house GOP for voting it down.
It's time America stops trying to be the world's policeman..... Let China or India or Venezuela step up to the plate to stop childhood marriage.... or better yet Iran, Saudi Arabia or Egypt....

How does it get the job done?
Does it do anything that would insult the hell out of some other countries and mess up delicate relations?
I would love that no money is involved and believe the power of free speech would be excellent.
(Sec. 5) Authorizes the President to provide assistance, including through multilateral, nongovernmental, and faith-based organizations, to prevent child marriage in developing countries and to promote the educational, health, economic, social, and legal empowerment of girls and women. Sets forth priority assistance criteria.
Directs the President to establish a multi-year strategy to prevent child marriage and promote the empowerment of girls at risk of child marriage in developing countries, and should include addressing the unique needs, vulnerabilities, and potential of girls under age 18 in developing countries. Sets forth strategy elements.
(Sec. 6) Expresses the sense of Congress that the President and all relevant agencies should collect and make available data on: (1) the incidence of child marriage in countries that receive U.S. foreign or development assistance where the practice of child marriage is prevalent; and (2) the impact of the incidence of child marriage and the age at marriage on progress in meeting key development goals.
(Sec. 7) Amends the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961 to require that Department of State country reports on human rights practices include a description of the status of child marriage for each country in which child marriage is prevalent.
#2. Where does the money come from to fight these abuses in foreign countries?
#3. We can't even protect our borders in the USA from illegal aliens, how do we enforce something that goes on among cultural circles in foreign countries?
IMO we cut our foreign aid budget to countries that practice customs in contradiction to our own, instead of creating legislation that will inflate our taxes as the self appointed moral example and world police.
Here's the congressional cost estimate.
Basically the estimate is that the cost would be between 67 and 108 million between FY 2011 and 2015.
What right do we have to make any legislation to prevent child marriage in other countries?
Are there other bills that run through congress where we create legislation banning laws or customs in other nations?
In Mexico you move in and they call that married.
My wife has a younger cousin who got pregnant at 14 and had the baby at 15 which is typical in Mexico. What do we do about that?
