That's not true at all. It has to be held by the Treasurer and kept in a non-interest bearing account until it's claimed. I recently (last year) claimed a bank account I had opened almost 15 years ago and had forgotten about. It only had 101 dollars in it, but I found it after running my name through one of those "unclaimed property" sites.
