Hillary Clinton gets involved and comes up with a compromise
"...the form will now ask for the names of the child's "mother or parent 1" and "father or parent 2."..."
State Dept steps back on gender-neutral parentage (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2011/01/08/AR2011010802320.html?hpid=moreheadlines - broken link)
Will this make everyone happy now? I sure hope so.

Well they could have done that to begin with rather than what they initially proposed.
That would have been compromised at the get go and this thread wouldn't have gone on for 16 pages.

First of all, this is Fox News, so,, hmmm..... But if it's true, then count me among those who DO NOT wish to become a 'Gender-Neutral' society. That is insanity...!! There ARE still males and females, like it or not. So, who is Parent 1 and who is Parent 2? Now we have to find a way to reword it so that Thing- oops I mean Parent 2, does not get offended because they are not #1, etc.
And since when did same-sex couples get to dictate the rules of society? And the State Dept.? What, are they the majority now? Why don't we just force everyone to have an operation to remove their genitalia? Will that make everyone happy, finally...??

The madness continues.
I'm surprised more people weren't offended by the 1 vs. 2 thing rather than the lack of gender specification. I don't see how that's same-sex couples dictating the rules, though. Parent 1 and Parent 2 is still completely inclusive of opposite-sex couples.
Wow, way to jump to the genitalia removal.
As others pointed out, the forms still require you to indicate your gender. Clearly not an intention to strip people of their gender--just to allow for more options.
I read the article. Hillary said she didn't know that Mother/Father were going to be removed and she never intended that. IMHO I think the backlash started from the conservative side with the traditional families.
In the end though, Hillary did the right thing and now everyone should be happy.

Are you effing kidding me? They caved on this? Un-freaking-believable. I can understand morons on a message board getting their panties in a twist, but grown-up elected representatives in Congress??? This is the most immature goddamn thing I've seen in a long, long time.
