If there was single payer insurance system in place these poor people would not have to worry about money at all and could focus on their very very ill child.

Malyia Jeffers, Toddler, Has Limbs Amputated After Waiting Too Long In Sacramento ER: You Can Help
Even with these symptoms, emergency room personnel told the family to wait. More than five hours later, Jeffers told KTXL that he couldn't take it anymore.
"I don't like being a loud, obnoxious person. Especially in an ER. But I felt it was a need for me to at least make a scene enough where it was actually getting ridiculous being told I was next over and over."
After Jeffers demanded assistance, they took a blood test that suggested the child was in liver faliure.

The bill for the helicopter transport alone is $26,000. Although the family is currently staying at the Ronald McDonald House for $10 per day, their other expenses are being paid out-of-pocket and Jeffers describes their insurance policy as inconsistent at best.

[Anticipating Rightwinger Replies] Well, the irresponsible parents should have planned ahead for the possibility of such an emergency. Why should I be forced to have to pay for their sick kid? [/Rightwinger]

Ugh, that was hard to type, even in pretend mode. I don't know how anyone with a heart could actually type such a thing and mean it. But trust me, posts like that are coming. Just watch.

I wonder how many people were in the emergency room for treatment which didn't require an emergency room visit?

That family has health insurance, but there are people there with no health insurance who are being seen for things which could have been handled by the local health clinic.

The baby in no way should have been waiting for hours on end before it was too late.

I don't think this has anything to do with single payer insurance.

This was poor logistics on the part of the emergency room staff.

No guarantee a single payer system could have prevented this, too many variables. Please don't use kids to misinform and push propaganda.

However international rates of infant mortality show that our system lags behind those of other countries that are "socialized".

Would parents go to seek care for their children quicker if there was not a financial stigma attached? Probably. Would this same kids from unnecessary disability, or mortality, in some instances yes, probably. Would this result in more parents taking their children in unnecessarily? Yes probably, but better safe than sorry.

Our current system rewards those who go into specialties like dermatology vs. ER, pediatrics or primary care, or OB/GYN. As a result, when those people are needed, they are few and far between, they are overloaded and getting care takes longer than it should. Multiple reforms, malpractice, tort, student loan repayment for healthcare providers, should be considered and implemented to some degree as well as developing a system that does not result in massive 3rd party profits.

You mean like illegal aliens? I think a better title for this thread " OBAMA AND NAPOLITANO MAIMS TODDLER" Obama's lack of action shutting down illegal aliens crossing the border filled the emergency room causing this legal American child to take a back seat to illegal Mexican aliens looking to get free medical care for a common cold.

Would have been more accurate.

Single payer could very well have increased the ER waiting time. Wait times vary from ER to ER based upon the density of the population served and significant other factors. Huge fail OP. Way to politicize this child's tragedy when it had absolutley NOTHING to do with health insurance.

The better questions would have been: Why did the parents wait so long to seek medical assistance for their child? And, why didn't the parents get this child to a Children's hospital in Sacramento initially rather than an "urgent care" center?

It appears the parents did not know how to recognize an "emergency". Very sad but some of this lays on the parents too as I read it. YMMV.

The family's ordeal began on a Sunday morning in early December, when the normally rambunctious Malyia developed a fever and became lethargic, Ryan Jeffers recalled.

When her symptoms persisted the next day, Jeffers and Yang, his fiancé, took their daughter to an urgent care center, where specialists told them to go to the emergency room. By the time they arrived at Methodist, he said, splotches that looked like bruises had developed on Malyia's cheeks, and she was "getting really weak," he said. "After a while, she couldn't even walk," and her fever had jumped to 103 degrees.

Probably a lot. Usually there are. Maybe they could have been seen at other clinics if there was affordable health insurance vs. using the ER as a PCP.

That family has health insurance, but there are people there with no health insurance who are being seen for things which could have been handled by the local health clinic.

Local health clinics close. Additionally many have little in terms of lab and diagnostic capability.

The baby in no way should have been waiting for hours on end before it was too late.

Agreed. However it happens because of staffing issues with ER's.

I don't think this has anything to do with single payer insurance.

Debateable. If there was a single payer system could people who were in the ER have been getting treatment elsewhere, and thus not keeping the ER from seeing true emergencies?

This was poor logistics on the part of the emergency room staff.
ER's are expected to remain financially solvent. This means not staffing to be prepared, but staffing the to turn a profit. You never know when several people will have health emergencies simultaneously, or when it will be quiet and no one will come in, as a result, there are times when ER's cannot handle the workload of patients coming in the door. They also cannot turn people away, and they cannot call for helicopters unless they're sure its something awful. I have seen nights in an ER where noone comes in between 11 PM and 5AM. Then I've seen nights where people have been waiting 12 hours or more. You can't blame the ER staff for poor logistics when they have constraints put on them.

Preparation costs money, and may seem wasteful, but I'd rather have a prepared ready staff when I have an emergency, vs. one that is overloaded and can't help me because of a lack of staff, and I'd sooner pay higher taxes, odds are myself or someone I love will need it at some point. Don't you think so?
