So I assume a Jewish CO could have decided to send you to synagogue? Or a Muslim CO could have sent you to the mosque? Would that have been ok too?
Of course not, did I ever imply that it was? The reality is that neither Jewish nor Muslim COs make religious service a requirement, only Christians in the military feel the need to abuse their authority, forcing others to attend Christian services against their will.
Yeah I don't necessarily agree with that motto but then again I'm in the Army not the Marines so I don't have to deal with it. On top of that, my friends who are Marines have never said anything about being forced to believe in God first or even at all just because its in the motto. With all due respect, you served a long time ago and no one I know is forced to go to religious services anymore minus perhaps a memorial service and I dont count that as the same concept. They aren't as single minded when it comes to religion and/or spirituality anymore. There are also a lot more choices on different religions that you can go to if you have a certain belief. Even in Basic, we weren't forced to go to any of the choices for the religious services on Sunday. Some people went just to get out of the barracks though so they could put off cleaning for a couple hours. Like I said, I haven't heard of anyone actualy having to go to classes just because they went red on this test which most did in at least one area.
As I said, it was not Marine Corps policy (to my knowledge). It was the policy of individual Commanding Officers, notably, Christian Commanding Officers.
In Marine Corps boot camp, everyone was required to attend religious services. There were three types of religious services you could attend: Catholic, Christian Non-Denominational, and Jewish. Attendance of one of those religious services was mandatory. As R. Lee Ermy stated as the Drill Instructor in the movie "Full Metal Jacket", "Your heart may belong to Jesus, but your A$$ belongs to the Corps." That was the sentiment throughout the Corps during the 1970s. I seriously doubt if things have changed.
Well times change. True times change slower in the military a lot of times but its a different military in a lot of ways than when you were in. Like I said, none of my Marine friends have felt forced into Christianity and neither has anyone I know in the Army. There are a lot more choices of services to go to nowadays than those you listed in all the branches and I doubt most COs would get away with making it mandatory nowadays.
