In several states there is screening in place as you mentioned. However, if he's never had treatment his record is clear.
If things were changed, yes. On the Ed show last night this precise discussion came up. There is no reason there could not be ONE person at a school to act as Liaison with the public safety authorities to see that he got an evaluation. But that didn't happen. If it's determined that one is a danger to self or others, it's a mandatory 72 hour commitment and psych eval. There, he most likely would have been identified as mentally ill and proper treatment could have been started.

It doesn't help that Brewer has slashed funding for mental health services in AZ to those who need it most, however.

Wow, an eighties flashback! Thanks for reminding me. I almost forgot that following the suspension of the Constitution and imposition of marital law in 1983, Reagan, as supreme leader for life, ruled by decree that we had to put "a lot of mental patients out on the street". Sure would have been nice if we had a Congress to legislate such matters. Que sera sera.

I thought Wal-Mart refused to sell ammo to the guy charged with murder. He did not purchase the gun at Wal-Mart either he bought it at a national chain sporting good store. Get your facts straight!
1. You've got no room to talk about huge assumptions with nothing to back it up.

2. He did get the ammunition at wal-mart. The first wal-mart he went to refused to sell anything to him. The second didn't.

The problem with saying that national healthcare could have fixed Mr. Loughner is that there is no proof of that. He could have been so mentally disturbed that he kept quiet for the last year or so to make sure he could carry out this act without obstacles. Then there is the whole "would he submit to testing" question.

In AZ, if someone thinks a person is a danger to self or others, all one has to do is to contact an agency here and they'll get the ball rolling. One can petition the court for a mandatory 72 hour commitment and psych eval. Had this been done, he would not have had a choice in the matter but to submit to questioning.

Didn't know that, thanks.

But I have to wonder, with all of his teachers, classmates, and reports of violent threats, why wasn't he taken in then?
