A record 14.6% of all new marriages in the United States in 2008 were between spouses of a different race or ethnicity from one another. This includes marriages between a Hispanic and non-Hispanic (Hispanics are an ethnic group, not a race) as well as marriages between spouses of different races -- be they white, black, Asian, American Indian or those who identify as being of multiple races or "some other" race.

It is what it is...neither good nor bad. I think it's great that racism is apparently not preventing anyone from marrying whomever they want. But interracial marriage is not the end goal itself--it's an indicator of moving toward a more accepting society.

I live in rural state near a small town, outside of a larger metro area. Our area is more diverse because of the presence of a major university, and my kids go to school with a mix of old time local farming families, and faculty kids from around the world. That said, it's still rural and conservative. The amazing thing--the kids are pretty much color blind. They date who they want. That's a good thing, and says lots about our future.

I don't think interracial marriage is any more special than non-interracial marriage by dear French friend. That being said, I guess I'm in the very coveted liberal category of a potential interracial marriage since my girlfriend is British

Just hope we are not doomed to blended countries like Brazil and Mexico, where interracial marriage has blended in almost everybody and look at them now. Some multicultural societies are doing pretty well thank you very much -- my home city is one of them, and more broadly speaking, my country. I assume NYC is doing pretty well too.
