The US chilling out is not a straight and narrow path to "no weapons and war". Well if you live in La-La land I guess that would be true, but the rest of us living in reality know better.

Yes the industrial power that the USA had at that time as well as the almost total destruction of many other nations infrastructure sure did help.

Not quite the same nowadays, parts of the USA now look like those war ravaged areas of the world after WWII.

I am going to go out on a limb and guess you are one of those who does not like the idea of the USA not being Number one in the world???

By that I mean most Americans alive now have ALWAYS lived in the most powerful nation on earth, they have known nothing else, when the USA slips into second or third place as a global power, how will this affect you?

Coming from a nation that has never been one of the 'players',it matters little to me.

But a lot of Americans seem to be quite attached to being No. 1.
America will remain first for many decades to come. We spend a fortune on weapons and science, maybe not for the benefit of the common man, but we hold it. Americans are also conditioned to having the best and we won't settle for chinaman life. Our political system is weaker now but powerful enough to survive into a revolution. There will be a free market. We will no longer be suckers to the ignorance that caused our financial and cultural decline. Powerful countries learn powerful lessons and new technology and freedom is on our side and engraved in our spirit.

That edge is being lost,if given the choice, other nations aren't picking US weapons systems as much any more, even in the areas where the USA was preeminent just a few years ago.

Who says Americans will get the choice?

no not the only one, but it's the country that spends more on defense and weapons technology than all other nations on earth combined.

And according to all conventional 1990 wisdom, Japan was supposed to have far eclipsed us by now.

China is heading for a demographic disaster with it's one child policy . In 30 years one third of the Chinese population will be 65 or over with an insufficient working population to support it. In addition due to the fact that Chinese parents prefer a male child to a female one, two thirds of that population will be male. Do you know what happens when most of the men in a country can't marry?

As china is always looking far ahead, you don't think they might see those potential problems?

But anyway, the point of the thread is how Americans view the idea of not being number one....

I don't think it's about choice or having the world currency. I think its about having an attitude and know-how. Many countries don't know what good quality of life is because they never had it. They don't expect it or even ask for it. They think its an unreasonable desire.

That might be true of people in nations with poor access to the internet, but nowadays a LOT of the world's people know what is going on elsewhere in the world.

Funny thing is,people HERE don't seem to know much of what is going on elsewhere...nor do they seem to care to educate themselves.

The 'can do' attitude is a thing of the past here really.
