They may very well be friends outside Congress. Wouldn't be unusual and is actually the norm. Outside the political arena opponents many times have similar interests, hobbies, etc. which they have in common.

Would you prefer we return to those thrilling days of yesteryear, when Members of Congress got into fights, challenged each other to duels, discharged pistols in the chamber and beat each other senseless with canes? (Sen. Sumner was beaten so badly that he didn't return to the Senate for over a year.)
