How do you figure that working americans all agree that the middle class needs dismantling? ask 10 people what is good for the middle class, and you'll get 10 different answers. Who does our tax policy benefit? Who does our monetary policy benefit? Who does our foreign policy benefit? Who does our regulatory policy benefit? etc...
these are difficult questions, and I've seen little indication that average americans are capable of answering them with the level of nuance and complexity that's needed.
That is a direct result of the dumbing down of the school system in the US.
'Privatize them'? Are you serious? Do you really think that putting your retirement money in the hands of the same financial institutions that caused this mess will provide you with any 'security'? Do you see how terribly hard they fight to keep people in their homes?
The banks and investment firms would like nothing better than to get their hands on your money, take risks with it, and kick you to the curb if they don't pan out.
Exactly. That is what George Carlin was talking about. They will sell us on the benefits of privatization, but it is inherently predatory. There is not a cent devoted to the common good, or to ethical business practices, if more money can be made otherwise. We may need to refine and reform the federal equivalents, but at least they are intended for the good of the people.

Carlin would have done a much better job as president than Bush. Sad.
