Since Obama has moved to what many consider the center I've been hearing people saying that Americans for the most part prefer this because America is a centrist country. Obama is a democrat moving to the center. If we had a republican in the white house and since many feel Americans prefer a president who governs from the center what would a republican president look like governing from the center? Would this be a republican president that tea party people would agree with?
It's hard to satisfy a liberal with an answer since they consider everyone to the right of Dennis Kucinich a far right wing conservative.
Funny you mentioned crazy Dennis
Dennis Kucinich sues over sandwich
Rep. Dennis Kucinich has filed a lawsuit against a House of Representatives cafeteria over dental injuries he says he sustained three years ago when he ate a sandwich containing olives that were not pitted.
Lot of opinion on who is center right but not many definitions. I'll give it a shot.
Center right is:
- Believes in keeping taxes as low as possible, especially on business and middle class. However, will want to continue Social Security and Medicare entitlements
- Is personally faithfully religious but does not use religion as a basis for policy
- Believes in a strong defense department. Will be for a strong military force but will not engage the forces unless provoked or absolutely needed
- Believes business and free trade are essential to national economic success but will not be in favor of inequitable trade policies.
- Wants gov't to stay out of the private lives of private citizens. Does not believe in "nanny" state policies nor will be against something like gay marriage because that would be gov't intervention
- Limited foreign aid except in dire humanitarian issues (e.g. AIDS in Africa)
- Does not believe the Constitution is a living document, believes it is a document that limits rather than enpowers gov't
- Pro gun rights (links back to Constitution beliefs)
- Wants legislation from Congress vice through bureaucratic regulations
- Does not believe in judicial activists
- Believes welfare is necessary but is strong on keeping it limited and temporary; welfare to work is a tenet of center right
I'm sure I missed a few policy issues but that's all I could think of right now. Again, this is someone that would never actually get elected in today's day and age. Our country tends to call candidates like these fence sitters but then once a candidate is elected, then they want them to govern this way.
