Utah has a state flower, a state fossil, a state cooking pot and 21 other official symbols. It might soon add a state gun.

The state House passed a measure Wednesday, by a 51-19 vote, that would make the Browning M1911 pistol - designed by Utah’s John Moses Browning in the early 20th century - the state firearm. The bill now goes to the state Senate.

At this time when gun control laws are such a big issue, I don't think it is a good policy for any state to adopt an official state gun.

This is completely separate from any gun control laws. Why do you think this is a bad idea? I see it as simply a way to honor Mr. Browning and acknowledge/advertise that he was from Utah...

Default good choice!

Utah showing one gun on a state plate can't hold a candle to PA's 'Flagship Niagra' firing multiple guns. The plate was eventually pulled because of poor visibility issues.

Utah just has to make sure the image of the 45 is clear and contrasts well with the background.

The news reported a 6 year old kid suspended from school because he pointed his fingers like a gun. That is the sort of behavior that should draw outrage.

Somerville high school in NJ has a buckskin clad pioneer as its mascot. Several years ago the gun was removed from the logo.

Outrage at Utah is misdirected as those that protest should look no further than video games their kids play and all the violent movies to focus their efforts.

The venerable 45 has served this country well.

Sounds defeatist.
On the contrary, no better time to make a stand for second amendment rights.

Default News, Utah may adopt a state gun

Go, Utah!

2011 marks the century anniversary of the famous Colt 45 1911 pistol, designed by Utah's own John Moses Browning.

I own four 1911s myself.

Oh, and my guns and I have never harmed anyone.
