Acknowledging a problem exists is Step One.
First of all, what you've described is the vast majority of people who pursue degrees of all races. Education for education's sake is a privilege that most people do not enjoy. Higher education is increasingly seen as an investment, and most people want a return on their investments.

Second of all, you come off as extremely ignorant and vaguely bigoted, just FYI. Fake ebonics doesn't help your case.

That's the problem with America. See next quoted passage.

So basically what you've just said is absolutely irrelevant to any interpretation you have of "black culture" and is more indicative of the increasing commodification of education in a society marked by income inequality.

So blacks cannot learn as they are being mocked and harassed, presumably by other blacks? Or is Bull Connor III busing in mobs of white bigots to mock and harass blacks in school?

Nope. I can't help it if reading comprehension is not your forte. There's too much tunnel vision among young blacks. Guess what, between Point A (starting point) and Point B (pot of gold), there's a path filled with flowers, but a person can't smell the flowers and enlighten himself/herself if consumed by tunnel vision (translation= a high paying job, preferably a fun one). Stop and smell the roses and maybe a light switch will go off inside, opening doors you once believed were closed. (Not directed at *you*, it's "you" in the broad sense)

"Flowers", as stated above = metaphor for the "true love of learning"

It's quite possible artsy guy has an identity crisis. I wouldn't waste another minute on him.

You cite a source regarding an extremely wealthy city-state that has a strong education system and you think it's solely a cultural issue as opposed to a structural issue.

Additionally, you think that you can read the mind of young blacks, even though you're clearly not black and have no experience in poor, predominantly black schools or neighborhoods. Your posting in this thread has been laughable. Nothing more to discuss with you, continue wallowing in your own ignorance.

oh, and dunksgalore, if you listened to obama's sotu you'd know he said:

"not only does the super bowl champion need to be given a standing O, but the science fair winner needs to be given a standing O too"

the above in purple text is paraphrased. and it resulted in a standing O for obama.

haha. i win. you lose.

renaud (OP), i know you're from france, so in case you don't know, the "super bowl" is america's football championship game. a "standing O" is a standing ovation.

It's absolutely correct that people need to want to better themselves, but when everything around you (your school, the justice system, the media) tells you which avenues of success are "right" for you and which ones aren't, eventually you begin to absorb a lot of this indoctrination. Add into that the concrete social and economic conditions that many poor blacks live in and you arrive at situation where those blacks with the will to succeed aren't even being met halfway.

You can't expect cultural change without addressing the systemic issues that have created the situation you're complaining about. The richest blacks in America are, for the most part, entertainers. It's not because this is essentially something more valued in what people in this thread are basically describing as the black hivemind, it's because it was one of the few avenues that was legitimately available to many of them. This sets a bad precedent, but we need to consider why it exists in the first place.

un-freaking-believable. Who is filling your head with all these falsities? That's who you need to be blaming. You need to blame the very people who are telling you the system is stacked against you because you are black. Do you want to know the truth? It is stack against most everyone regardless of their race. The reason I say this, is because nothing is gauranteed, you have to work hard and you will fail sometimes. Get up, brush yourself off and try harder next time. Blacks are no different than anyone else trying to survive.
