The measure, approved last month during the General Assembly's lame-duck session, lets gays and lesbians use civil unions as a way to enjoy several of the same rights as people who are married, ranging from sharing a nursing home room to being involved in dramatic end-of-life decisions.
Clout St: Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn signs civil unions bill

Remember when Vermont legalized civil unions? It was the year 2000. At the time, civil unions were viewed as a radical, left-wing idea. Today, civil unions are considered a centrist or even conservative idea. It shows you how much opinions about same-sex relationships have changed in just the last 10 years - a very brief period of time.

I'm fine with gay people having rights. The civil unions give them rights, but don't make it the same as marriage, which satisfies most conservatives. I think it's a win-win situation.

Cool.

Personally I think all marriages should be named "civil unions" as far as the state is concerned.

Marriage is a religious right.

This was passed under a lame duck legislature.

Aside from the arguments about having children, how is a male/female marriage superior to a male/male or female/female marriage? Let's say two 75-year-olds get married - a male and a female. How is their relationship worth more to society than the relationship between two men or two women?

No. Look at the election results from 2008. Most of the southern part of the state didn't vote for Obama.

It's traditional. We also don't allow polygamous marriage even though there's nothing really genetically wrong with it.

I don't believe in gay marriage or civil unions. Marriage should be the only form of relation recognition, not domestic partnership or civil unions, cohabitation or whatever.

Marriage- one man and one woman.
