Paul Krugman Blames Egypt Crisis On Global Warming | NewsBusters.org

I guess he must be in partnership with Gore buying up carbon credits to sell.

Are people like this even taken seriously?

BTW, if people don't already have the Newsbusters site, it is a keeper! Instead of just claims, you get video and direct quotes for supporting the facts.

Global warming? I'll bet he flipped a coin to see if he would blame global warming or Bush for the Egypt problems.

I still can't grasp why the NYT employs this idiot to write opinion pieces about politics and things when he's only got credentials to speak about economic issues.

I guess his economics are worse than his political rants??

Here's what he wrote. Seems very plausible. But I doubt most right wingers even bothered to read it.

We’re in the midst of a global food crisis — the second in three years. World food prices hit a record in January, driven by huge increases in the prices of wheat, corn, sugar and oils. These soaring prices have had only a modest effect on U.S. inflation, which is still low by historical standards, but they’re having a brutal impact on the world’s poor, who spend much if not most of their income on basic foodstuffs.

The consequences of this food crisis go far beyond economics. After all, the big question about uprisings against corrupt and oppressive regimes in the Middle East isn’t so much why they’re happening as why they’re happening now. [...]

While several factors have contributed to soaring food prices, what really stands out is the extent to which severe weather events have disrupted agricultural production. And these severe weather events are exactly the kind of thing we’d expect to see as rising concentrations of greenhouse gases change our climate — which means that the current food price surge may be just the beginning.

Yes, I admit I didn't read it because when I do I can just feel my IQ drop a point or two reading his drivel.

You would think an economist MIGHT have a clue that severe weather hasn't caused any food crisis.

The people in Egypt are UNEMPLOYED and cannot AFFORD the food. Add to that the INFLATION in food prices due to the ECONOMIC DOWNTURN and you have your answer.

When you run deficits and print money, it causes inflation. Your dollar doesn't buy as much as it did before. Inflation always starts to be reflected in the cost of food and energy before it does other things.

To some degree the graph in that article could also indicate oil prices, the spike in the 80's did not have much effect on the food prices. You got the double whammy going on now because of ethanol. Less food to eat so we can produce more expensive ethanol fuel both of which would cause food to go up.

Ethanol is a major factor since farmers can sell their corn to the fuel companies and get more money than they could if they sold it for food and the feeding of animals that we consume.

Since the ethanol increase, the cost of animal feed has skyrocketed and you pay for it when you go to the store to buy meats, anything sweetened, etc.
