Our leaders, both republican and democrat, have been totally compromised by greed, avarice and hubris with their fawning of Mubarak for 30 years.
Meanwhile, the Egyptian students, housewives and working-class laborers have embraced the souls of America's patriots with their unwavering determination to taste freedom...not corporate sponsored pseudo-freedom but REAL HUMAN FREEDOM.
There is a stunning amount of inequality in Egypt. But America is even worse
Mubarak stole billions (http://www.washingtonsblog.com/2011/02/mubaraks-have-estimated-net-worth-of-50.html - broken link) from his people, while the American oligarchs (http://www.washingtonsblog.com/2009/09/zandi-oligopoly-has-tightened.html - broken link) may have stolen trillions. See this (http://www.washingtonsblog.com/2010/11/its-not-great-recssion-its-great-bank.html - broken link), this, this and this
Mubarak was supported by the military. But the military -industrial complex has taken over America (http://www.washingtonsblog.com/2011/01/jeremy-grantham-all-in-all-it-appears.html - broken link) as well (moreover, there is a tradition in countries like Turkey for the military to ensure that religious fanatics do not take over the country)
Mubarak ignored the wishes of his people. But the American government hasn't been listening to it's people either. For example, a 2010 Rasmussen poll found (http://www.washingtonsblog.com/2010/02/only-21-say-us-government-has-consent.html - broken link) that "just 21% of voters nationwide believe that the federal government enjoys the consent of the governed". A 2010 Gallup poll determined that nearly half of all Americans believe "the Federal government poses an immediate threat to the rights and freedoms of ordinary citizens". Poll after poll shows that "both national parties are deeply unpopular with an electorate looking for something new and different". Polls reveal that 82% of all Americans wanted Wall Street to be reined in in a substantial and meaningful manner, and yet nothing has really changed, and the government has let Wall Street have it's way on all the important issues. Polls find that Americans want the big financial players who acted with fraud to be punished, and yet the government has let all of the big fish off the hook. And the government has ignored many other desires of the American people, including investigations into torture and spying on Americans, impeaching George W. Bush if he lied about Iraqi WMDs (which he did)
Mubarak murdered and tortured people without following the rule of law. America hasn't been wholly saintly in this regard over the last 10 years either (and see this)

Do you think the founders would've been proud of our fawning over Marcos, Pahlavi, Pinochet, the Saudi scum, etc., etc., etc. ? Support of lowlifes that have something we want under the guise of altrusitic claptrap is hardly anything new or unique to Egypt.
I would like to have actaully seen some leadership on the civilain side in the protest like poland. Seems the military is now i charge from reorts. Not always good.

That's the point...its NOT new!
We (our elected officials) do this crap ALL THE TIME!
...just not usually so clumsily and with such amazing speed:
While the United States says it is concerned about the "violence" in Egypt as the unrest continues, and as protesters defy curfews in Egypt, the Vice President of the United States, Joe Biden expressed support for Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.
Speaking to the PBS Newshour on Thursday, Vice President Joe Biden responded to the follow question from Jim Lehrer,
Has the time come for Hosni Mubarak to go, to step aside?
"No, I think the time has come for Hosni Mubarak, to move in the direction, to begin to move in the direction of being more responsive to the needs of the some the people out there, a lot of the people out there protesting are middle-class folks," Biden told Lehrer.
They're not smart enough for democracy over there. The US knows whats best for them.
