WASHINGTON — As many as one in 10 Americans can't get Internet connections that are fast enough for common tasks such as viewing photos, video and Web pages, and two thirds of schools have broadband connections that are too slow to meet their needs. Those are some of the conclusions from the Commerce Department as it unveiled a detailed, interactive online map showing what types of high-speed Internet connections are available — or missing — in every last corner of the country.
Broadband map shows up to 10% in U.S. lack good Internet - USATODAY.com

More investments needed

It wasn't a need even five years ago. I doubt it is critically important compared to other things, like the deficit.

Don't worry, BO is going to try to pay poor people's internet bills for them.

The telecom market was heavily deregulated during the 1990's. Various start ups tried and failed to implement regional and nationwide broadband networks. The biggest reason for the failures is that established telco companies with network infrastructure in place have an inherent advantage when it comes to delivering wire twisted pair or fiber optic broadband services.

Simply put implementing either wired or wireless broadband internet services takes MASSIVE amounts of capital. There isn't the the amount of freely available credit around like there was before and establish telcos have locked down market share.

This is NOT a situation where government regulation is holding anybody back.

Or maybe, just maybe people in rural areas don't need high speed internet access.

They don't have much of a choice.
It's either dialup or satellite.

There are some small local wireless setups around in some rural towns.
Verizon has some good coverage for both cell and mobile broadband.

The stimulus set aside some money to bring high speed to rural towns but that kinda morphed into also allowing that money to be used in inner cities to bring internet to the urban poor.

Government never passes up an opportunity to "help us" - as long as they can use it as an excuse to spend more, tax more, and rule us even more.

Just say "NO" to that kind of "help"...
