In order to enforce the Pax Americana (global U.S. hegemony), the United States spends more on the military than all other nations combined. In absolute terms (~$1 trillion) and relative terms (~ 7% of GDP) it dwarfs all other spending. But is the enormous cost to maintain the Pax Americana worth it? Or is the cost too high when compared to the relative benefit to the U.S.?

I don't buy the false premise either.

Yes. For starters 11 navy strike groups, then 2 pending wars, over 160 overseas bases, largest and draining military budget, most propped up governments and dictators around the world.

If there had been US hegemony non of that would have been necessary.

I believe the US was all alone in a 14-1 vote by Arab nations condeming Israeli settlements at the UN today. Had there been US hegemony that vote would have been 0-15.

The US is in the Security Council. It overrode the will of the rest of the world by this veto. Israel building illegal settlements on other people's territory? The US said 'no'. Hegemony? You tell me.

Ironically, I would consider the "Pax Americana" to be a period of peace that DIDN'T involve the US being in every country of the world. It would be a period where we were a great nation that lead by example, where other countries wanted to emulate us.

The U.S. doesn't have absolute total global hegemony but its as close as anyone is ever going to get. And whatever you want to call the U.S. level of influence, it costs a lot. So is it worth it? Well no one seems to think so thus far (small sample however).

Add me to that total. Hell no it isn't worth it. Our defense budget alone should be a cause of national disgrace, not national pride.
