Shouldnt be odd at all when many Americans view this monstrosity as a normal daily driver

15MPG ? Wow. My car gets almost 60 miles to the Gallon. Oil prices are getting ridiculous I agree ( Almost $9 a gallon in the UK) and yet most people are still not trying to curb their consumption which makes no sense at all IMO.

I have no sympathy to those who choose to drive a gas guzzler and complain about the high prices. I drive a truck that gets 20 mpg mixed. Right now I can't afford a newer car so I suck it up and don't complain.

I think if people actually budgeted for what they were going to spend per month on gas, it wouldn't be a big deal for many. My wife and I set aside cash every month for our gas consumption, and aren't feeling the pinch, even though I just paid $4.09/gallon the other day. If gas prices continue to go up, we may have to set aside a bit more, but it will just come out of a different part of our household budget.

Really, if paying a few dollars more for gas each week is going to break you financially, you weren't going to make it anyway.

Nope, I pay it.

Mostly diesel, only three of the 18 are gas.

Fuel is a write off in the end but, still has to be paid for.

This is my truck of choice.

The US gallon is smaller than the UK gallon, so your car gets 50 miles to a US gallon. The US EPA fuel economy test seemed to get low (in my opinion unreasonably low) numbers compared to the European tests, so I suspect a 50mpg rated car in Europe would be at most 40 mpg in the US. Perhaps only 35 mpg. Still much better than most American cars.

Critics of people who drive pick up trucks fail to realize that those trucks are needed for many occupations. We also have a great deal of our economy wrapped up in recreational sports which requires a certain type of transportation to haul that stuff around. Some people driving trucks or SUVs daily can't afford to own two vehicles and so they pick the one with the broadest application for their needs. I drive a Traverse which was the smallest vehicles I could find that would hold an electric wheelchair, a chair lift and a recumbent bike all at the same time. Are we going to give it up and start taking a wheelchair taxi-bus at $28 a ride every where we want to go? No. It does hurts to pay $50-60 or more to fill the tank but the alternative would be worse.
