The human brain isn't fully developed until the age of 25. Two or three years doesn't make that much of a difference, even less in todays world.
Humans are heard animals. Studies have been done showing that "gang" mentality can influence people into doing things that they know are wrong. I'll have to look it up, but they showed a group of 10 people a picture of a rectangle. Five of them were in on the study. Then they changed the picture to a triangle, and the five in on it swore it was still a rectangle. Four out of the other Five began to agree with the group, knowing they were seeing a triangle, but calling it a rectangle. One person did not.
This proves that when a group of people start doing something that is wrong, other people will agree with that, so as not to upset the heard.
We all know that rape is wrong, especially when someone is 11 years old like this. But there are other reasonings other than what people here are thinking. These boys should have to go through tough psychological examination, and hopefully they can go on to help them as they get older.
Of course they should be punished, but there is more to play here then the initial reaction by most of us.
Most of us would find it difficult to form a group of like minded aquantances willing to take advantage of mispriced gumballs at the local Walmart. But this group assembled and thrived in a culture that alerted not a single protest or call for help. Dozens particated. Hundreds knew.
Remember this memphis, that 11 year old was once someone elses 8 1/2 lb. daughter.
This is group think too. At this time, prevailing group think is that this is cruel and inhuman in our society. Social/peer pressure and opinion form our group think - our laws.
One or more of these young men had the idea from somewhere that the act was acceptable, especially since they passed around images of it. There are aspects of our society that could suggest to someone, over time, that it's acceptable. We just don't want to believe that, or to seriously consider the consequences of deteriorating societal norms, in the name of tolerance.
Tolerance has progressed to accepting intolerant practices and behavior.
Human behavior should come with consequences. The consequences should be sufficient to make rational people think before committing heinous crimes. Psychoanalysis is not a sufficient deterent.

Agreed. At least Texas has an "express lane" for capital punishment cases, hopefully these animals get put at the top of the list. No use having the taxpayers support them any longer than necessary for a trial.
