I disagree. If you murder someone, you should serve the rest of your life. I'm in favor of the death penalty in theory, but it has become basically impractical in this country. According to statistics, it's more expensive to execute someone than to keep them locked away for life.

So by your logic Manson should be released because he ordered the murders done.

If it is found that he is no longer a threat to society (which I doubt in the case of Manson), then yes.

Which was not your original premise which was that he and Sirhan had served enough time and paid "their debts to society".

Really, Manson "is" a threat and always will be. If he was released he would be back to doing what he was before his arrest!

He didn't just kill a man, which is bad enough, he no doubt changed the entire direction of our country's politics. He will never pay his dues to society. Never.

Some crimes are so heinous that there can be no mercy and no forgiveness.
Sirhan committed such a crime and should count his blessings that he did not get the death penalty.

Yeah...the victims families get to feed and house him until they too die.

It's not a perfect system, but it is the best option we have. Don't get me wrong - a very visceral part of me agrees with the death penalty. However, if there is a chance that an innocent person can be put to death then the death penalty should never be enforced, in my opinion.

Yes, it does suck that the victims are dead while murderers get to live out their lives with the comforts of television, books and visits from loved ones. But never underestimate the enormity of the loss of personal freedom. Justice is served as best as it can be.
