The state Constitution prohibits the arrest of legislators while in session unless they're suspected of committing felonies, treason or breach of the peace.
Administration Secretary Mike Huebsch said law enforcement costs for the Capitol protests are reaching $5 million – and it’s costing a lot to clean up the building after weeks of demonstrations against the governor’s proposed restrictions on public unions. But Assembly Democrat Cory Mason of Racine testified that he can’t do his job – and he and other Democrats set up desks outside the building to meet with constituents.
Also, former Congressman Dave Obey – who wanted to attend a 100th anniversary event for the Joint Finance Committee – was denied access. He could have used his clout to get in, but Obey said it shouldn’t be necessary.
Huebsch said 41 tour groups have postponed or canceled their visits to the Capitol because of the protests.
