Sometimes I like to speak French on the telephone in the office. Sometimes when my French speaking coworker wants to talk to me, she might speak in French. Working in Korea, I speak English with my English coworkers. My bilingual coworkers might speak in Korean with each other. NOBODY CARES!!! It's rude to try to intrude on a conversation. If I hear my name, then I might ask what's going on. However, on the whole I don't try to butt into other people's conversations. It's none of my business. I don't care if I don't understand, my coworkers don't care they don't understand some of my conversations...because guess what? It's none of their business. Usually it's a joke or a trying to convey the right message in a different language that wouldn't work in another language.

It's ridiculous to think that you need to butt into other people's conversations. It makes for a hostile work environment. We have a coworker that inserts herself in EVERY conversation. NOBODY likes her. When the Korean teachers are speaking Korean, she always asks what is going on. It's annoying, childish, and rude.

Well, at least SOME of the times I've been there (at other jobs) wearing jeans and a T-shirt, I'm obviously NOT working. But customers will see me, recognize me, and ask me questions. I've even had them do it when I wasn't even an employee of the store, for God's sake! In those cases, I asked them, "What makes you think I work here? I'm a customer, just like you."

see above

It's none of their business what employees talk about or what language they use in their own PRIVATE conversations. It's an A-B conversation, so they can C their way out of it.
It's not a private conversation if it's in the workplace.

Imagine two guys privately discussing a female co-worker's physical attributes or making racist or sexual jokes and it's overheard?

The workplace isn't private at all.

If these people are so hell-bent on speaking the language of their own country, they ought to consider returning home to them.

Very true. They sure do love our money and they don't even require that dollars be printed in Spanish.

It shows the problem with our immigration policies. There is very little diversity in immigration, it's very unbalanced and it doesn't favor those who come to assimilate and become a real part of American society.

We need a better mix of immigrants -- that's obvious. And we need immigrants who wish to fit in.

That is fine.

BUT, when a customer who only speaks Spanish comes in, then the employee has the right to say "Sorry, but I "no hablo Espanol".

If employees are to speak English all the time, it had better be all the time.

If it is workplace appropriate, why should it matter?

ROTFLMAO!

At the rate things are going, we'll have to speak CHINESE in a few decades.

What an attitude. The US of A is my country too and I even have a DD Form 214 to prove it.

It's too bad I'll probably never have the chance to purposely practice my Spanish in front of you just to annoy you.

Nope not Chinese. According to recent news, it is Latino immigrants who have the hardest time integrating.

You missed my point. Allow me to explain:

The Chinese have a very robust economy.

The Chinese have a lot of money.

They are starting to buy properties in the US.

We are borrowing money from the Chinese.

At the rate things are going, the Chinese are going to own us.

We are going to have to bend over backwards to keep them happy; they might just expect us to learn their language.

It's not workplace appropriate to use foreign languages especially in front of customers but also to shun the other employees. It's not appropriate to whisper and purposely exclude others from workplace converstations.

A good workplace rule is to say that English must be spoken in the work areas, in front of customers, but breakroom and cafeteria conversations could be in pig latin.

More Chinese immigrate to the USA than Americans immigrate to China. They only have an economy because we handed them ours -- foolish political leaders that we have.

It doesn't matter -- if they want to come and live here, then they need to learn English. If we want to go and live there then they can require us to learn their language.

It's extremely foolish to relocate permanently to another country and never intend to learn the language of that country or speak it.

But also it's extremely foolish to have a very lopsided immigration policy that is so heavily predominated by people from just one country.
