Jeffs was in total and complete control of 10,000 lives. He controlled everything to the smallest detail, including the women's peculiar fashions; before him, the FLDS women in earlier times dressed much like all other women in the US, albeit with slightly more modesty and less makeup.

His control was so strong that, on his command, his faithful literally dismantled and packed up several factories the FLDS owned in the Salt Lake Valley, and re-built them in Texas within a month's time. To do this, families, including the children who were as young as 5 worked around the clock doing construction work in 24 hour shifts. There was no pay, nothing but food and primitive shelter.

One word from Jeffs could tear a man from his family, or remove his wife (or wives) and children and arbitrarily pass them on to another man. Neither man had any say in the matter. He controlled what everyone heard and watched, controlled all the money (Millions and millions of dollars, some gotten from military supply contracts done by what amounted to slave labor), owned all the houses they lived in, and had the final word in every matter, social or secular.

With that kind of power, what is left to a person such as that? Perversion, of course. He married all his step-mothers after his father died to cement his position, then married girls and women from all his competitor's families, then swapped around the wives of his competitors to make it even more difficult to oppose him. His pedophilia was just the final step. He could do it and get away with it, so he did.

He completely believes he is the straight unadulterated word from God. God speaks through him alone. To oppose him in any way is an offense to God, and at the same time, every single thing he does pleases God. Prison will not change him; all it will do is make him old.

The sentences he got require 35 years of prison time before he can come up for parole. He's 55 now- he will be 90 before he's eligible.

Without a doubt, the FLDS will continue as a cult- it has survived for 100 years. No matter how Jeffs tries to keep his control going from behind bars, it's inevitable that it will fade, and probably fade quickly, as the FLDS is now broke, in disarray, and in total upheaval.

Jeffs had competition from other leaders of the cult before he gained the Presidency, and some of those leaders are still around and still strong. Some are facing their own bigamy charges, and some aren't.

Not everyone in the FLDS is a polygamist- a majority are not, but they don't control the cult or are in the power structure.

I read today that one prominent leader said the first thing that needs to be done is tearing out the gates that surround their ranch in Texas. Once that happens, big changes are bound to occur. I'm sure efforts will be made to make the members less noticeable- the odd prairie fashions will disappear, and they will start looking like everyone else again.

Since Texas is going to keep a close eye on them, I expect that polygamy will also become practiced by only consenting adults, and done very quietly. There are polygamists living all over the west, communing with each other in small and much less formal groups. These people still are Fundamentalist LDS, but many are not members of the FLDS church.
Fewer men will marry more than one wife 'spiritually', but they will come up with a way to take care of the women, especially the old and aging. As in any religion, it is the women who keep it going.

Another good possibility is the FLDS will move on to another place and desert Texas altogether. There are other communities of FLDS in Mexico, Canada, and the original FLDS towns of Hildale and Colorado City still exist. While the state of Utah is watching those towns as closely as Texas is watching the Yearning For Zion ranch, both of those towns have plenty of abandoned homes that are still there, ready for occupation again.
Many polygamists hide in the open, living in cities like Denver or Seattle. It is possible that the FLDS may end up doing the same in time.

The FLDS is always going to be very isolated socially, and will keep to themselves, but the practices of Warren Jeffs will be done away with. The FLDS simply can't afford any more notoriety. But make no mistake- they will cling to their fundamentalist Mormon ways, just as the mainstream Mormons do.

And to think, this man had spiritual control over thousands of lives. I can't imagine how awful that must have been.

Perhaps the markets and S&P are listening to Jeffs?

I personally hope he dies in prison and is forced to engage in a same sex "marriage" in prison
