There's no agricultural work in the winter (unless you can tag in to one of the big corporate farms) because family farmers don't raise much livestock anymore--the market is controlled by the big guys. I've been on vacation in Hawaii and it wasn't cheap. How would you pay for a "vacation" with welfare benefits (or even the airfare) if you weren't trying to get work, or had work lined up?
These are not people on unemployment..these are people on welfare.
You get a job you lose your welfare.

It's nice to have pat answers but that's just conjecture and speculation.
The MI agencies wouldn't comment on the findings.

There's also not enough data to make a conclusion like you did that they all went for jobs.
And it's not just families on welfare..the system is scammed by the unscrupulous.

no no no.. What we've heard from liberals all over the board is that you need to give these people money because they CANT get up and go where the jobs are.. these poor people, cant afford to even travel 1/2 an hour away.. Now you want us to believe they cant afford to travel to the next count, but they can afford to go to Hawaii.. Of course all for the sake of looking for work?

Working poor get food stamps--remember? Don't get me wrong--if people really are using welfare payments to go on vacation, it needs to be stopped and the fraud needs to be removed from the system. I just find it highly unlikely that it's the cause in the vast majority of cases.

When you move to a new state you are supposed to apply for food stamps in that state.
Are these people perhaps double dipping ?

It's not just Missouri.

Millions in Calif. welfare money spent at out-of-state vacation spots | Bakersfield Now - News, Weather and Sports | News
"Nearly $69 million in welfare money meant to help California's neediest families has been spent or withdrawn in places like Hawaii, Las Vegas casinos and cruise ships from Miami.
..
The list includes $12,433 spent at the upscale Ala Moana shopping center, $3,030 spent at a group of gift shops next to Jimmy Buffett's Beachcomber restaurant on Waikiki Beach and $2,146 withdrawn from ATMs on the island of Lanai, home to a pair of Four Seasons resorts and little else, the Times said."

I know zip personally about the rules for food stamps, but according to this, it looks like you can use them anywhere.

Can I use my EBT card in another state? | billeater.com

I've personally never heard that argument, but the problem we see here are people having to travel for minimum wage jobs--not for better paying jobs. It's like a new segment of seasonal/migrant workers, but they tend to be rural, small town, and midwestern. There's no unskilled work in the winter, the commute to the city is too far for a factory job (and those are being cut, plus they can't afford to live in the city) so they wind up sharing a trailer with another family (or getting housing in exchange for working resorts, like in Hawaii) at vacation spots during the winter. They make minimum wage year round, but at least during tourist season they get tips.

mb1547..you can use it out of state but if you move you are supposed to register for and use the social programs of that state.

That is your assumption. Nowhere in any article has that been stated.

A person on welfare/food stamps can barely live in their state yet can afford plane tickets to Hawaii to look for min wage work and drop off welfare rolls ?
