This economic situation has me very concerned and I am wondering if its time to start stocking up on non-perishable foods. I am uncertain whether 3 months from now if there will even be grocery stores with food, or a dollar that can even buy it if there was. If the collapse happened today I wouldn't even have enough food to get me a week without a trip to the grocery store. This is a frightening scenario. Is it time to get serious about this Y2K style?

Check out the Self-Sufficiency and Preparedness sub-forum.

To answer your question, stocking up on canned goods and other forms of long-term non-perishables such as MREs and freeze-dried pouches if you can afford it NOW simply has no down side.

If the world doesn't end, ya still gotta eat -- and there you go.

Are you looking at the same economic indicators as the rest of us? They're all on a significant upward trend. Even the unemployment rate is finally starting to budge.

I hope you buy plenty of prunes because purchased non-perishables in any large supply will constipate you so bad life won't be worth living.

I'm not sure, but I keep a little around for an emergency. I worry more about natural disaster in the short-term than anything. The problem is no food is non-perishable and can last forever. Canned food and MRE's are only good for maybe two decades at most. I think there will be a massive economic collapse in the US, but it's impossible to time. It could happen in as little as 6 months, or it may not happen until 100 years from now. It all depends on how long they can prop up the house of cards, and so far the Fed and the US government are actually doing an outstanding job of propping things up.

It is always good to have these things on hand. You never know when a natural disaster or extended power outage can occur.

Better to be prepared for a unexpected or expected event then get caught with your pants down. If you have not started this would be a good time to think about it, we have not felt the full effects of inflation of higher gas prices.
