Nicaragua was one of the target colonization areas, as I recall, but the head of the country sent the US a letter saying no.

There's also an article in the NY Times archives (I believe it's from 1862) I came across once about a group of free black men meeting in NYC to protest Lincoln's plans to colonize them in another country. They were Americans, and they had no intention of going.

C'mon Oz....we're talking about South Carolina here. Get real. Not saying that it's South Africa circa 1970, but society in that state is as segregated as you'll get in this country.
